Golden Eagles Just Miss A Big Conference Upset

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday at Cal State East Bay, but not before throwing a major scare at one of the conference leaders.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the game, but the Pioneers came up with the big plays down the stretch to prevail in a tight 65-62 victory in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (8-10, 7-6 CCAA) was outscored, 18-10, in the final quarter and missed a golden opportunity to take down the second-place Pioneers (16-2, 11-1 CCAA).

Anai Washington had a sensational game for the Golden Eagles with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Nicole Flennaugh had 12 points.

Zhane Duckett and Grace Campbell had 14 points each for Cal State East Bay.

Alyssa Fisher had eight points, while Lily Buggs had six points and seven rebounds. Buggs was limited to 26 minutes before fouling out and Jada Johnson had two points and two rebounds while limited to just 15 minutes due to foul trouble.

Cal State LA shot just 35.1 percent for the game (26-of-74) and was just 4-of-17 in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles were just 5-of-18 from 3-point range and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot just 35.8 percent for the game (24-of-67) and was 8-of-25 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 9-of-18 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 43-34 and committed 14 turnovers to 18 for the Pioneers.

Cal State LA surrendered the first five points of the game, but came back and took its first lead of the game following a basket by Buggs that made it 12-10. A jumper by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 14-10 lead and a free throw by Flennaugh and a 3-pointer by Fisher gave them a 18-11 lead after one period.

A jumper to Melena Bland to open the second quarter and a 3-pointer by Yesenia Smith gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 23-13 and a jumper by Iyanna Lamb gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 25-13.

A layup by Buggs kept the margin at 11 points at 32-21 and Cal State LA settled for a 32-25 lead at halftime.

Flennaugh opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 10 points at 35-25 and the Golden Eagles still led by nine points after a basket by Washington, 39-30, before the Pioneers went on an 11-0 run to take the lead.

A 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles the lead back at 42-41 and a free throw by Lamb made it 43-41. Mina Tameliau gave the Pioneers the lead with a 3-pointer at 44-43, but Flennaugh countered with another 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles the lead back at 46-44. Four straight points by Washington gave the Golden Eagles a 52-47 lead entering the fourth quarter.

A jumper by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 60-57 lead with 3:38 to go, but that was the last basket the Golden Eagles would make. A 3-pointer by Campbell tied it at 60-60 with 3:18 left and Campbell got the go-ahead basket to make it 62-60 with 1:36 to go. Cal State East Bay stretched the lead to four points before Buggs hit a pair of free throws to slice the lead to two, 64-62, with 22 seconds left. The Pioneers hit one free throw to make it a three-point margin with 14 seconds left and the Golden Eagles missed their last three shots to end the game.
