LOS ANGELES –Cal State LA's women's volleyball team, the 2022 California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champions, was well-represented when the all-conference team was announced on Wednesday.
Juan Figueroa was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the first time after guiding the Golden Eagles to their first conference title since 2005. Figueroa led the Golden Eagles to a 21-5 record, including a 16-2 record in conference play that was the best in the CCAA by two games. After a 2-3 start, the Golden Eagles won 19 of their next 21 matches.
Cal State LA had seven players earn all-conference recognition, including sophomore
Emily Elliott and freshman
Iane Henke, who both earned first-team recognition.
Eliza Cannon and
Ashley Dittmann earned second-team honors and
Shelby Grubbs,
Ayjah Landers and
Jameson Sanders received honorable mention.
Elliott earned All-CCAA honors for a second straight year. She was the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2021 and named to the second team. This season, she leads the team and is currently third in the conference in kills with 285 and second on the team and fifth in the conference in points with 332.5.
Henke is one of the top freshmen in the country and is second on the team in kills with 272. She leads the team and is second in the conference in service aces with 54 and she leads the team and is third in the conference with 349.5 points. Henke is also second on the team with 257 digs.
Cannon earned second-team All-CCAA honors for a second straight year. She leads the team and is sixth in the conference with 530 assists and she also has 57 kills, 15 service aces and 182 digs.
Dittmann is having her best season with the Golden Eagles and earned All-CCAA honors for the first time. She is third on the team with 220 kills and fourth in service aces with 21. She also has 189 digs, which is third on the team.
Grubbs, the CCAA's Elite 13 award winner for highest GPA in women's volleyball in 2021, earned her first All-CCAA recognition this year. She leads the team with 87 blocks and also has 71 kills.
Landers is having her best season with the Golden Eagles and is fourth on the team with 156 kills. She also has 32 blocks.
Sanders has made a big impact as a true freshman for the Golden Eagles. She leads the team in digs with 258 and is second with 35 service aces.
The awards were announced on the eve of the six-team CCAA Tournament, which begins on Thursday in Cal State San Marcos. Cal State LA, as the conference regular-season champions, earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament and a first-round bye. The Golden Eagles will play the winner of the Cal State East Bay-Sonoma State match on Friday at 3 p.m. The championship match is Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cal State LA was ranked third in the final West Region poll today. The tournament announcement will be made on Sunday on ncaa.com.
