Golden Eagles Catch Fire In Win Over Pepperdine

MALIBU -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team used an explosive second half to record an impressive exhibition win at Pepperdine on Friday night.

Nicole Flennaugh and Lily Buggs combined for 46 points in the second half to lead the Golden Eagles to a 90-74 win over the Waves in Firestone Fieldhouse. Cal State LA enjoyed success in its third and final exhibition game after battling Pac-12 powers USC and Arizona in its first two.

After trailing at halftime, 40-34, the Golden Eagles outscored the Waves, 56-34, in the second half. Cal State LA had a 33-18 edge in the fourth quarter.

Flennaugh led the way with a game-high 32 points, including 22 in the fourth quarter and 27 in the second half. She was 10-of-19 from the floor, including 9-of-17 from 3-point range. The nine 3-pointers equal her program record set last season at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Buggs was also sensational, posting a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double. 

Anai Washington had 10 points and three rebounds, while Olivia Hodges had eight points and eight rebounds.

Ally Stedman had 24 points and seven rebounds to lead Pepperdine.

Silivia Fonongaloa had six points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 39.5 percent for the game (30-of-76) and 40 percent from 3-point range (14-of-35). The Golden Eagles were also 16-of-20 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles had a 49-47 rebounding edge and committed 11 turnovers to 16 for Pepperdine.

Cal State LA will open the 2022-23 season next Friday at Concordia at 11 a.m.
