Golden Eagles Claim CCAA Title All For Themselves

CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team made sure there would be no sharing of the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship.

The Golden Eagles, who clinched at least a share of the title last Saturday, wrapped up sole possession of the title with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-9 win over Chico State Friday night in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (20-5, 15-2 CCAA) last shared a piece of the conference title in 2005 and on Friday earned sole possession for the first time since 2000.

The No. 19 Golden Eagles also wrapped up a first-round bye in next week's CCAA Tournament and will go straight to the semifinals on Friday. Cal State LA has never had a No. 1 seed for the conference tournament before.

Cal State LA, ranked No. 19 in the nation and No. 3 in the NCAA Division II West Region, recorded its fourth straight 20-win season after winning for the 18th time in the last 20 matches.

Ashley Dittmann had 10 kills, one ace, 12 digs and hit at a .526 percentage, while Emily Elliott had 10 kills and four service aces. Iane Henke had six kills and one ace.

Zoe DiNardo had six kills and two blocks for Chico State (3-21, 1-16 CCAA).

Cal State LA had to battle in the first set. After jumping out to an 8-2 lead, the Golden Eagles saw the Wildcats rally and take a 12-11 lead. After trailing 13-12, the Golden Eagles tied it on a kill by Dittmann and took a 15-13 lead after kills by Elliott and Dittmann. Cal State LA took a 20-15 lead after kills by Elliott and Dittmann and got to set point at 24-17 after a kill by Henke, an ace by Dittmann and a bad set by the Wildcats. Chico State got to within 24-22 before Cal State LA got a kill by Henke to win the set.

The second set was tied early at 7-7 before a solo block by Grubbs and an attack error put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Cal State LA extended its lead to 12-8 after kills by Ayjah Landers, Elliott and Henke and took an 18-11 lead after an ace by Elliott.

Cal State LA took a big 23-14 lead and got the final two points of the set on service errors by the Wildcats.

Cal State LA trailed in the opening points of the third set, but used an 8-0 run to extend an 11-7 lead to 19-7 behind the serving of Niu, who had back-to-back aces during the run.
