BELLINGHAM, WASH. -- After two exhilarating postseason victories, Cal State LA's women's volleyball team will be playing for an NCAA Division II West Region championship tonight on the WECU Court in Carver Gym.

The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles will face No. 8 seed Chaminade this evening at 7 p.m. with the winner earning a regional title and a spot in the national championships. Cal State LA (23-6) is making its second straight appearance in the regional championship match and seeking its first West Region title since 2005 and the third overall in program history. Chaminade (26-7) is seeking its first-ever West Region title. 

Both teams enter the championship match with significant momentum. The Golden Eagles are 21-3 over their last 24 matches following a 2-3 start. The Golden Eagles beat No. 6 seed Sonoma State in four sets in the first round on Thursday and swept Central Washington in three sets on Friday. Chaminade has won 10 straight matches, including a five-set win over No. 1 seed Alaska Anchorage on Thursday and a three-set victory over No. 4 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Friday. The Silverswords claimed the 2022 PacWest Conference title with a remarkable 19-1 conference record and are 23-1 in their last 24 contests.

The two programs are meeting for just the second time in the NCAA playoffs. Chaminade took a three-set decision in a first-round match back in 2004. 

Cal State LA claimed a three-set win in an early-September match in Los Angeles and both teams have enjoyed great success since that meeting.

The Golden Eagles picked up an impressive win on Friday against Central Washington, a program that had been a nemesis in recent years. The Wildcats beat the Golden Eagles in a five-set first-round NCAA match in 2018 and had posted two other victories since then before Friday when the Golden Eagles flipped the script.

The win was the 100th for head coach Juan Figueroa, who is 100-44 in his fifth season.

Emily Elliott had 14 kills and was dominant late in the match while helping the Golden Eagles overcoming the Wildcats in a tight third set. Iane Henke had 10 kills and 11 digs. Cal State LA also got great production from middle blockers Haley Roundtree and Shelby Grubbs, who had eight kills and 11 blocks. 

It was a well-rounded team victory, to be sure, as the Golden Eagles limited a prolific Central Washington attack to just a .150 hitting percentage.
