Golden Eagles Drop A Double OT Heartbreaker

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team battled well once again Thursday night, but was unable to overcome big discrepancies in rebounding and free throw attempts in a tough double overtime loss to Northwest Nazarene.

The Golden Eagles had their chances, but came up painfully short in an 87-82 loss in double overtime in University Gym. Cal State LA (1-3) overcame early deficits and had an eight-point second-half lead before the Nighthawks (2-1) rallied to send the game into extra time. Cal State LA held a late lead in the first overtime period before the Nighthawks sent it into a second OT with a basket with six seconds left and after the Golden Eagles tied it with 3:45 to go in the second overtime, Northwest Nazarene scored the next seven points and pulled out the win.

Shane Bell continued his outstanding play and led the Golden Eagles with 20 points. He was 8-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Dominic Escobar, in his second game of the season, had 18 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Payton Moore had 14 points.

Tru Allen had 23 points for Northwest Nazarene, while Kobe Terashima had 16 points and seven assists.

Deuce Walker had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Alexander Sokol had nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and two steals.

Cal State LA shot 44.9 percent overall (31-of-69) and was 13-of-27 from 3-point range (48.1 percent). Northwest Nazarene shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) and was 6-of-23 from 3-point range. Cal State LA, though, shot just 10 free throws, making seven, while Northwest Nazarene was 23-of-33. The Nighthawks also had a hefty 54-36 rebounding edge. Cal State LA committed 18 turnovers to 22 for Northwest Nazarene.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as seven points in the first half before rallying and taking a 28-27 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers by Moore and Bell. A layup by Bell gave the Golden Eagles a 32-30 lead, but Northwest Nazarene scored the final five points to take a 35-32 lead.

Sokol opened the second half with a 3-pointer to  tie it at 35-35 and the Golden Eagles, after trailing 42-37, went on a 16-2 run to take a 53-44 lead courtesy of a dunk by Bell, 3-pointers by Bell, Moore and Sokol, a layup by Moore, another 3-pointer by Sokol, and a layup by Walker after a steal and assist from Sokol with 12:21 to go.

Cal State LA took its biggest lead at 55-45 after a layup by Escobar with 10 minutes to go, but the Nighthawks went on a 11-2 run to close to within 57-56. Escobar stopped the run with a basket and Moore hit a 3-pointer to get the lead back to 62-56 with 5:33 to go and a pair of Escobar free throws made it 64-56 with five minutes left.

A dunk by Bell kept the lead at 70-65 with two minutes to go and Moore hit a free throw to make it 71-67 with 1:15 left. Northwest Nazarene countered with a free throw and then a game-tying 3-pointer by Allen with nine seconds left. Cal State LA was unsuccessful on a field-goal attempt at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

Cal State LA took a 73-72 lead in overtime on a dunk by Cyrus Johnson and a 3-pointer by Walker gave the Golden Eagles a 76-74 lead with 1:55 to go. Once again, though, Allen tied the game, this time with a layup with six seconds to go to send the game into a second overtime.

A 3-pointer by Kyjuan Cannady tied the game at 79-79 with 3:45, but the Nighthawks went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Walker stopped the run with a 3-pointer with nine seconds to go, but the Nighthawks hit a free throw to close out the game.
