LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team picked up another shutout Sunday in California Collegiate Athletic Association, but also had to settle for another tie.
The Golden Eagles and Cal State San Bernardino battled to a 0-0 tie in a big game between conference playoff contenders. Cal State LA (5-2-5, 2-0-4 CCAA) recorded its third shutout in a row and its fifth in six conference games. The ties, though, only count for one point in the conference race (wins are worth three) so the Golden Eagles have 10 points, while Cal State San Bernardino (6-4-2, 2-2-2 CCAA) had eight points. Cal State LA is the only team still unbeaten in conference play, but is fourth in the conference, three points out of first and just one point out of third.
Both goalkeepers were outstanding, as one would expect from a scoreless draw. Carly Luna of Cal State San Bernardino made five saves, including a pair of dazzling stops in the second half and an unbelievable stop in the first period.
Areli Reyes made two strong saves for the Golden Eagles and did another fantastic job of managing the game. Cal State LA defenders
Jaclyn Orozco,
Destiny Moedano,
Haley Clark and reigning CCAA Defensive Player of the Week
Thaiz Hernandez did a stout job of limiting high-quality chances for a dangerous Yotes squad.
The biggest moment of the match came in the opening half when
Destiny Moedano took a free kick from just outside the box. Her shot seemed destined to find the upper corner to the far post, but Luna was able to get just enough of the ball to deflect it off the post. Cal State LA had players in the area of the rebound, but just couldn't get another attempt.
Luna also made a big stop on Cal State LA's
Skylynn Rodriguez with about 11 minutes to go and made a tremendous diving stop of a header by Cal State LA's
Erin Schrock with about four minutes left.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 10-9 edge in shots, while Cal State LA had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles, in fact, allowed their first corner kick in the past three games.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game on Friday against Sonoma State at 4:30 p.m.
