Golden Eagles Pull Into First With Win Over Seawolves

LOS ANGELES -- It's crowded at the top of the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings and Cal State LA's women's soccer team joined the pack after a huge home victory on Friday.

The Golden Eagles got a pair of goals from Liliana Gonzalez and a determined defensive effort made them stand up in a 2-1 victory over Sonoma State in University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-2-5, 3-0-4 CCAA) pulled into a four-way for the conference lead with Sonoma State (8-3-2, 4-2-1 CCAA), Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Marcos. All four teams have 13 points. The top six teams in the conference are separated by two points with four conference games remaining.

Gonzalez was the offensive star of the game with her two goals, giving her a team-high three on the season. Her first goal came in the fourth minute and came courtesy of a brilliant shot by Lauren Sanchez. Her hard shot was deflected by Sonoma State goalkeeper Kennedy Williams, but the rebound came out and Gonzalez got to it first just before a Seawolf defender and tucked in a shot just inside the near post. The assist by Sanchez was her first of the season.

The second came early in the second half after a beautiful pass from Heather Gomez, who hit Gonzalez in stride down the right flank. Gonzalez dribbled into the box and rifled a shot inside the far post and past Sonoma State backup goalkeeper Phoebe Barnes to make it 2-0. The assist for Gomez was her first of the season.

Sonoma State picked up its pressure after the second goal and broke through in the 59th minute on a goal off a free kick by Lexi Zandonella-Arasa that went through a crowd and appeared to go in through the fingertips of Cal State LA goalkeeper Areli Reyes.

Reyes was masterful in Friday's game, recording nine saves and doing an outstanding job controlling potentially dangerous crosses with traffic in front.

Sonoma State had a 15-10 advantage in shots and each team had five corner kicks.

Gonzalez, Jaclyn Orozco and Shelby Melin had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against San Francisco State beginning at 11:30 a.m.
