LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team was in a celebratory mood Saturday in University Gym as the Golden Eagles put an end to a lengthy California Collegiate Athletic Association championship drought.
The Golden Eagles honored
Malia Apodaca,
Allison Linder and
Talia Niu on Senior Day before Saturday's match with Cal State San Marcos for the first celebration. The second came following Cal State LA's 25-12, 26-24, 25-17 win over the Cougars that, coupled with Cal State San Bernardino's loss to Sonoma State later in the afternoon, clinched at least a share of the Golden Eagles' first conference regular-season championship since 2005.
Cal State LA (19-5, 14-2 CCAA) has a two-game conference lead with two matches remaining and can claim sole possession of the conference title with one more win or one more loss by Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, who are tied for second with 12-4 conference records. The Golden Eagles shared the title with Cal Poly Pomona in 2005 and with one more win can claim sole possession of the conference title for the first time since 2000.
The 2022 title is the fourth CCAA championship in program history.
The Golden Eagles got 12 kills, three aces and 10 digs from
Iane Henke and 10 kills, two aces and seven digs from
Ashley Dittmann.
Emily Elliott had nine kills, one ace and three blocks.
Mackenzie Jennings, Sofia Hedqvist and Jessica Thomas had five kills each for the Cougars (7-16, 6-10 CCAA).
Jameson Sanders had 12 digs and three aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Jaden Grova had 19 set assists and two aces.
Cal State LA had a 42-23 advantage in kills and outhit the Cougars, .333-.067. Both teams had seven blocks. The Golden Eagles had 12 service aces and seven errors, while the Cougars had six aces and three errors.
The Golden Eagles started quickly, racing out to an 11-3 lead behind the serving of Henke and Sanders. Cal State LA extended the advantage to 17-7 after a kill by
Eliza Cannon. The Cougars pulled to within 19-11, but an attack error, a block by
Haley Roundtree and
Allison Linder, two straight aces by Henke and a kill by Niu got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-11. A kill by Niu ended the set.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the second set before Cal State San Marcos unleashed a furious rally. The Cougars scored eight straight points to get close and then took a 20-19 lead after a kill by Turner. The Cougars got a set point at 24-23, but a kill by Henke and two attack errors gave the Golden Eagles the set.
The Golden Eagles broke open the third set with an 8-1 run that extended an 8-7 lead to 16-8. Cal State San Marcos scored four straight points to pull to within 22-17, but a kill by Henke and two straight aces by Grova ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday at Chico State. A Golden Eagle win will give them sole possession of the conference title.
