LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept the good times rolling with an impressive victory over Sonoma State Saturday afternoon in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 14-2 lead in the opening set and never let up in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 victory over the Seawolves in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. No. 24 Cal State LA (16-4, 11-1 CCAA) won its sixth straight match and snapped a six-game winning streak that Sonoma State (14-6, 7-5 CCAA) brought into the contest.Â
Cal State LA remains in first place in the CCAA with six matches remaining.
Iane Henke led a balanced Cal State LA attack with 10 kills, five digs and four blocks while hitting at a .389 percentage.
Emily Elliott had eight kills and one ace and hit at a .438 percentage.Â
Kiana Richardson and Leilani Hallman had eight kills each for the Seawolves.
Eliza Cannon had 15 set assists and six digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Jaden Grova had 13 assists, one ace and six digs.
Shelby Grubbs had three kills and seven blocks, while
Haley Roundtree had six kills, a .750 hitting percentage and two blocks.
Cal State LA had a 40-33 edge in kills and a 9-4 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles outhit the Seawolves, .354 - .160. Cal State LA had six service aces and three errors, while Sonoma State had five aces and nine errors.
The Golden Eagles got off to an explosive start, scoring the first six points behind the serving of
Ashley Dittmann and opened up a 14-2 lead after a block by Grubbs and Henke. Cal State LA held a 17-3 lead before Sonoma State started to rally, using a 9-0 run to make it 17-12. Sonoma State got as close as 22-19, but a service error and a kill by Henke got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 before a kill by Grubbs ended the set.
Sonoma State started well in the second set and had an 8-6 lead before the Golden Eagles scored five straight points on a kill by Elliott, three Sonoma State attack errors and a kill by
Ayjah Landers put Cal State LA ahead, 11-8. The Golden Eagles would lead the rest of the set and got to set point on a block by Landers and Roundtree before a service error gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles steadily pulled away in the third set, taking a 20-10 lead after a block by Elliott and Grubbs. Sonoma State got to within 22-15, but kills by Roundtree and Henke and an attack error by the Seawolves ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on the road next Friday at second-place Cal Poly Pomona.Â
