No. 24 Golden Eagles Post Epic Victory Over Broncos

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team picked up an impressive three-set win in a California Collegiate Athletic Association showdown between nationally-ranked teams in Kellogg Arena.

The No. 24 Golden Eagles pulled through by narrow margins in each of the three sets in a thrilling 28-26, 25-23, 29-27 victory over No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State LA (17-4, 12-1 CCAA) won its seventh straight match and took a two-game lead over Cal Poly Pomona (16-4, 10-3 CCAA) and Cal State San Bernardino in the conference race with five matches remaining.

The match was a riveting one with both teams performing at an extremely high level. The three sets had 26 tie scores and 14 lead changes in a match that was close throughout. Neither team mustered more than a five-point lead in any set.

Iane Henke had 12 kills and two aces to lead another balanced offensive attack for the Golden Eagles, who have won 15 of their last 16 matches and evened the season series with the Broncos, who won a five-set match in Los Angeles during the first round of conference play. Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills, one ace and 17 digs and Emily Elliott had 11 kills and two blocks.

Daisy Duke had a match-high 20 kills for the Broncos, while Samantha Campion had nine kills and 16 digs.

Jaden Grova had 20 set assists and five digs, Eliza Cannon had 12 assists and 14 digs and Jameson Sanders had nine assists and 11 digs.

Cal Poly Pomona had a 51-47 edge in kills, while the Golden Eagles had a .241 - .234 advantage in hitting percentage. Cal State LA had an 8-7 edge in blocks and each team had three service aces in a match where serve receive was exceptional for the most part for both teams.

The Golden Eagles fought back from an early 9-5 deficit in the opening set, tying it at 9-9 after a kill by Haley Roundtree and eventually taking an 18-14 lead after a block by Shelby Grubbs and Elliott. Cal Poly Pomona rallied to take a 21-20 lead, but the Golden Eagles got a kill from Cannon and a pair of attack errors to take a 23-21 lead. The Broncos scored the next three points to get to set point at 24-23, but the Golden Eagles a kill by Henke tied it. The Broncos got a second set point at 25-24, but the Golden Eagles tied it again on a service error. The Broncos got their third set point at 26-25, but kills by Elliott and Dittmann got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles the first set.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as three points early in the second set, but opened up an 18-15 lead after a kill by Roundtree, an attack error and kills by Ayjah Landers and Henke erased a 15-14 deficit. A kill by Elliott and an ace by Henke put the Golden Eagles ahead, 22-19 and Cal State LA got to set point at 24-22 after a kill by Dittmann. The Broncos saved the first set point, but a kill by Dittmann gave Cal State LA a 2-0 laead.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the third set and were down 21-17 before mounting a comeback. A kill by Dittmann, a block by Elliott and Roundtree and a solo block by Dittmann got the Golden Eagles to within 21-20. After the Broncos took a 22-20 lead, the Golden Eagles tied it after a kill by Elliott and an attack error, setting the stage for an exciting finish. Cal State LA got its first match point at 24-23 after kills by Roundtree and Henke, but Duke evened it with a kill and gave her side a set point after another kill. A service error tied it at 26-26, but another kill by Duke put her team ahead, 27-26. Cal State LA, though, dug deep and got kills by Henke and Dittmann and an ace by Henke to win the match.

Cal State LA will have another big match on Saturday night, facing Cal State San Bernardino in San Bernardino on Saturday at 7 p.m.
