LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team continued its winning ways Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal Poly Humboldt.
The Golden Eagles won their fifth straight match and are now 13-1 over their last 14 matches after a 25-13, 25-12, 25-23 win over the 'Jacks in University Gym. Cal State LA (15-4, 10-1 CCAA) maintained its one-game lead over Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona in the conference race.Â
Emily Elliott had a big night and had a match-high 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .600 for the Golden Eagles.
Ashley Dittmann had eight kills and
Iane Henke had seven kills and two aces.
Lindsey McLaughlin had eight kills and three digs for Cal Poly Humboldt (2-12, 1-10 CCAA).
Jaden Grova had 16 set assists and two aces and
Jameson Sanders had seven digs for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA built sizeable early leads in each of the first two sets and then held off a late Cal Poly Humboldt rally to finish the match in three sets.
An ace by Henke completed a strong serving run that gave the Golden Eagles an 11-3 lead in the opening set. An ace by Grova put the Golden Eagles ahead 19-9, back-to-back kills from Dittman gave the Golden Eagles a 22-12 lead and a ball-handling error an attack error and a block by Landers and
Haley Roundtree ended the set.
Blocks by Dittmann and Roundtree and Landers and Roundtree and a kill by Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 15-6 lead in the second set and a kill by Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 20-9 lead. A kill by
Talia Niu completed the set for the Golden Eagles.
The third set was a battle. The 'Jacks scored the first five points of the set and led as late as 8-7. A kill by Elliott tied it and started a 6-0 run behind some strong serving by Elliott that gave the Golden Eagles a 13-8 advantage.
A kill by Elliott opened up an 18-12 lead for the Golden Eagles, but the 'Jacks rallied and eventually took a 21-20 lead. A kill by Landers and a pair of attack errors gave the Golden Eagles a 23-21 advantage. The Golden Eagles got to match point after a block by Henke and
Shelby Grubbs and, after Cal Poly Humboldt made it 24-23, a kill by Henke ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against Sonoma State.
