Golden Eagles Fall Short Against Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to follow up on its big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Thursday and had to settle for a weekly split of road games.

The Golden Eagles trailed for most of the game and couldn't come back in a 76-69 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (5-9, 4-5 CCAA) pulled to within five points entering the fourth quarter, but missed four of five 3-point attempts and six of eight from the free-throw line in the final period.

For the second straight game, Cal State LA got an explosive offensive night from one of its guards. This time, it was Nicole Flennaugh who poured in a game-high 27 points and scored more than 20 points in a game for the fifth time this season. Lily Buggs, who erupted for a season-high 34 points on Thursday in the win at Cal State San Bernardino, had 13 points and five rebounds on Saturday. Buggs has scored in double figures now for the Golden Eagles in three straight games.

Monica Todd had 19 points, six rebounds and five blocks to lead five players in double figures for Cal Poly Pomona (5-9, 4-6 CCAA).

Jada Johnson had her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 20 rebounds. This marked the second time this season Johnson has had at least 20 rebounds in a game. Her season high of 21 earlier this season at Azusa Pacific is also a CCAA season high. Anai Washington also had 10 points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 37.5 percent (27-of-72) and hit just 6-of-24 from 3-point range (25 percent). The Golden Eagles were also just 9-of-17 from the free-throw line, including the costly 2-of-8 showing in the fourth period. Cal Poly Pomona shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) and made 11-of-23 from 3-point range (47.8 percent). The Broncos were also 11-of-20 from the free-throw line.

Both teams had 41 rebounds and Cal State LA committed 17 turnovers to 22 for Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State LA led only twice early, 9-7 following a 3-pointer by Flennaugh and 11-10 after a basket by Johnson. The Golden Eagles trailed, 41-33, at halftime.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but scored the last nine points of the period to make it 55-50 entering the fourth. Six straight points from Flennaugh and a three-point play by Yesenia Smith got the Golden Eagles to within five.

The Golden Eagles, though, struggled offensively in the fourth period, although they were able to string together some possessions to slice a 14-point deficit down to six points following a 3-pointer by Buggs.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
