Golden Eagles Win A Shortened Game Against Otters

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got another big game from reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week Lily Buggs in a win at home Thursday against Cal State Monterey Bay.

Buggs had a game-high 21 points and the Golden Eagles played well defensively in a 62-32 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in a CCAA contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-9, 5-5 CCAA) took command in the first half while building a 40-24 halftime advantage.

The game was called with 7.9 seconds remaining in the third quarter after a serious injury to a Cal State Monterey Bay player. Per NCAA rules, the game is ruled a forfeit since 30 minutes were not completed and therefore statistics from the game are voided. Cal State LA receives a forfeit win and moves into a tie for fifth place in the conference.

Buggs recorded her fourth straight double-digit scoring performance and she did it with a good shooting touch. She was 9-of-15 from the floor, hit her only 3-point attempt and made both of her free throws. Anai Washington also had a strong game for the Golden Eagles with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Lauren Pointer led Cal State Monterey Bay (1-12, 0-9 CCAA) with eight points and three rebounds.

Raya Smith had eight points and hit both of her 3-point attempts, Melena Bland hit all three of her field-goal attempts and finished with seven points, while Nicole Flennaugh and Yesenia Smith added five points each.

Jada Johnson led the Golden Eagles with 11 rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 48.2 percent for the game (27-of-56) and was 6-of-14 from 3-point range. Cal State Monterey Bay shot just 22.6 percent (12-of-53) and was 2-of-14 from 3-point range. Both teams had 35 rebounds and Cal State LA forced 18 turnovers while committing 13.

Cal State LA fell into a quick 5-0 deficit, but responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. A steal by Washington led to a 3-pointer by Flennaugh to open Cal State LA's scoring, a steal by Raya Smith led to a layup by Washington that tied it, a steal and basket by Raya Smith gave the Golden Eagles the lead and a layup by Buggs completed the run.

A layup by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 21-13 lead and the Golden Eagles settled for a 21-14 advantage after one quarter.

Cal State LA scored the first eight points of the second quarter and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. Washington opened the half with a basket, Buggs had two straight steals and layups and Washington had a steal and basket to make it 29-14.

Cal State LA led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter before settling for a 40-24 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles had a 22-8 advantage in the third quarter before the game was halted.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against San Francisco State.
