SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made a triumphant return to the court Thursday night with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory.
The Golden Eagles, playing for the first time since Jan. 6, got a phenomenal game from freshman
Lily Buggs and beat Cal State San Bernardino, 76-65, in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (5-8, 4-4 CCAA) jumped out to a 42-35 halftime lead and led by double-digit margins for most of the second half.
Leading the way was Buggs, who turned in one of the best all-around games in program history. Buggs poured in a season-high 34 points and also grabbed a season-high 19 rebounds. The 34 points and the 19 rebounds are both tied for sixth on Cal State LA's career single-game list for each category.Â
Buggs matched teammate
Nicole Flennaugh's 34 points against Cal State Monterey Bay as the highest-scoring game in the CCAA this season. Her 19 rebounds are second to teammate
Jada Johnson, who had a conference-best 21 earlier this season against Azusa Pacific.
Flennaugh also had an outstanding game, hitting four more 3-pointers on her way to 18 points, while Johnson just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Destiny Jackson led three players in double figures for Cal State San Bernardino (6-9, 3-6 CCAA).
Iyanna Lamb had a strong game for the Golden Eagles, scoring six points off the bench.
Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (30-of-75) and was 7-of-19 from 3-point range (7-of-19) and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. The Coyotes made only 4-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 50-45 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 17 for the Coyotes.
Cal State LA led 21-18 after one period and trailed only once, 22-21, before a 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A basket by
Yesenia Smith and a 3-pointer by Lamb stretched the lead to 39-30 and a Buggs free throw gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 42-32. Cal State LA settled for a 42-35 halftime lead.
A layup by
Anai Washington gave the Golden Eagles a 50-40 lead early in the third quarter and a layup by
Raya Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 58-42 edge.Â
Cal State LA had a 62-48 lead after three quarters and matched their biggest lead after a 3-pointer by Buggs made it 71-55 with six minutes remaining. A layup by Flennaugh made it 75-59 with 3:55 to go and the Golden Eagles maintained their advantage down the stretch.
