SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball saw its outstanding season come to an end Saturday night in the NCAA West Region championship match against Western Washington.
The Golden Eagles, the No. 5 seed, had late leads in each of the first two sets, but the No. 2 seed Vikings came up with the big points and ultimately pulled away for a 25-23, 29-27, 25-15 win in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (20-10), which was coming off victories over Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino in the first two rounds, posted its third straight 20-win season after advancing to a regional championship match for the first time since 2009.
Emily Elliott, the CCAA Freshman of the Year, had a strong match for the Golden Eagles and had a match-high 15 kills and hit at a .375 percentage.
Karla Santos added 13 kills and a team-high 17 digs.
Chloe Roetcisoender had 13 kills and six blocks to lead a balanced Western Washington attack, while Calley Heilborn had 10 kills.Â
Alejandra Negron had seven kills, four blocks and 10 digs for Cal State LA, while
Eliza Cannon had 29 set assists and five digs.Â
Western Washington had a 49-42 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .295 to .179. The Vikings, who captured their third regional title in the past six seasons, also had a 14-6 advantage in blocks.
The Golden Eagles had a golden opportunity to grab the first set, jumping out to a 15-11 lead after a kill by Elliott, a solo block by Negron, an attack error, a block by Elliott and
Daisy Crenshaw, a kill by Crenshaw and an ace by
Jeshmarie Suarez capped a 6-0 run. A kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 19-14 lead, but the Vikings went on a 10-3 run to take a 24-22 lead. Cal State LA fought off one set point on a kill by Negron, but the Vikings scored the next point to take the set.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the second set and still led 16-11 and 22-18 before the Vikings battled back. Cal State LA got to set point at 24-22 after a kill by Elliott, but the Vikings scored the next two points to even the score at 24-24. A kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles another set point, but the Vikings scored the next two points to earn their first set point. A kill by Negron tied it at 26-26 and a kill by Santos made it 27-27, but the Vikings scored the next two points to take a 2-0 lead.
Cal State LA held an early 3-1 lead in the third set, but Western Washington scored the next seven points to take control and held a safe lead the remainder of the match.
