Golden Eagles Turn The Tables For Their First Win

LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was able to turn the tables on host Biola and picked up its first victory of the season.

Lily Buggs completed a big comeback in the final two minutes with a game-winning layup and the Golden Eagles avenged a loss earlier in the season to the Eagles with a 61-60 victory. Buggs' game-winner came with two seconds remaining and the Golden Eagles successfully rallied from a six-point deficit in the final two minutes.

In the first meeting in Los Angeles in the season opener, Biola rallied from a late eight-point deficit and won in overtime.

Nicole Flennaugh had a season-high 27 points for Cal State LA (1-3), while Buggs had an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double.

Amiah Simmons had 22 points for Biola (3-2).

Alyssa Fisher had six points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Golden Eagles, while Jada Johnson had nine rebounds to go along with four points.

Cal State LA shot 32.8 percent for the game (21-of-64) and hit 25 percent (7-of-28) from the 3-point line. Flennaugh hit all seven 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA was an efficient 12-of-15 from the free-throw line with Buggs hitting all eight of her attempts. Biola shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) and was just 4-of-22 from 3-point range. The Eagles were 14-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 45-39 rebounding edge and committed 21 turnovers to 16 for Biola.

The Golden Eagles opened up an early 16-5 lead after a basket by Buggs and took a 19-8 lead after one quarter following a 3-pointer by Flennaugh.

Biola opened the second quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 22-21 lead, but a pair of free throws by Flennaugh, a steal and basket by Johnson and a steal and basket by Flennaugh and a pair of free throws by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 29-22 halftime lead.

A jumper by Fisher and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 34-22 lead and a pair of free throws by Fisher matched their largest lead of the game, 36-24. Biola, though, erased nearly all of that lead and got it down to 43-41 before a layup by Raya Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 45-41 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Biola took the lead early in the fourth period and built a 56-50 lead before the Golden Eagles started their final push. Flennaugh started the run with a 3-pointer and three free throws by Buggs tied the game. After Biola regained the lead with a basket, Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 59-58 lead following a steal and a three-point play with 28 seconds to go. Simmons gave Biola a 60-59 lead with 13 seconds to go, setting up the drive and layup by Buggs for the game-winning points.

Cal State LA will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Cal State San Marcos on Thursday.
