SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw its impressive four-match win streak come to an end Sunday on a blustery day at Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles, who scored a season-high three goals in a victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, were stymied by a Cal State Monterey Bay defense in a 2-0 loss at the Otter Sports Complex. Cal State LA (4-8-2, 4-3-1 CCAA) are now tied for fifth in the conference with Cal State Monterey Bay (7-4-3, 4-3-1 CCAA) with three conference games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.Â
Cal State LA was outshot, 6-3, and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Two outstanding defenses made it extremely difficult for either team to find much success on the attack.
Liliana Gonzalez had two of Cal State LA's shots, including both shots on goal.
Faith Baumgartner had the other attempt.
Cal State LA's talented freshmen goalkeepers
Olivia Spanish and
Areli Reyes again split duties. Spanish started and allowed one goal, while Reyes played the entire second half and made one save while allowing a goal.
The Golden Eagles were unable to register a shot in the opening half and fell into a 1-0 hole in the 15th minute. Mitsy Ramirez was able to curve a corner kick inside the far post for her second goal of the season.
Cal State Monterey Bay then made it 2-0 just two minutes into the second half. A shot by Caitlyn Ferguson was blocked in the box, but the rebound bounced outside to an alert Catalina Villegas, who drilled a shot inside the near post for her second goal of the season.
Gonzalez registered the Golden Eagles' first shot on goal in the 50th minute, but her high shot was saved by Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy.
Cal State LA's best opportunities at avoiding a shutout came late in the game. Gonzalez had a low shot saved by Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy and the Golden Eagles were unsuccessful converting the ensuing corner kick. Baumgartner's bid for a goal sailed high.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. with a home game against Chico State.
