LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put together quite a comeback on Thursday night, only to fall just short in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Chico State.
The Golden Eagles erased first-half deficits of 12 points and even took the lead late in the second half, but Chico State survived a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of a 69-66 win in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-5, 4-4 CCAA) had a four-game winning streak snapped, while Chico State (10-3, 6-2 CCAA) won its fourth straight game.
Khalil Williams had another big game for the Golden Eagles and had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds.
Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye had 17 points and kept the Golden Eagles in it during the first half.
Michael Wright had eight points and five rebounds.
Justin Briggs had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Kevin Warren had 13 points and five rebounds.
The Golden Eagles, still missing some key players, were able to battle back despite only seven players seeing time on the court on Thursday. Cal State LA did get
Shacquille Dawkins back for Thursday's game and he contributed eight points and four steals in 30 minutes of playing time.
Cal State LA shot 38.9 percent for the game (21-of-54) and just 6-of-24 from 3-point range. Chico State shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) and was 7-of-25 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 18-of-22 from the free-throw line, while Chico State was 12-of-16.
Cal State LA struggled on the boards and was out-rebounded, 42-24. Cal State LA had only seven turnovers while forcing 15 from Chico State.
The Golden Eagles fell into a 10-0 hole at the start of the game before Dawkins finally got them on the board. The Golden Eagles trailed 13-2 before a 3-pointer by
Sean Estes cut into the deficit and Cal State LA was down by 12 points, 17-5, before chipping away and pulling to within 38-30 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the second half to get close and then tied the game for the first time at 44-44 after a 3-pointer by Williams. Another 3-pointer by Williams gave the Golden Eagles their first lead at 49-48 with 11:28 to go and a 3-pointer by Williams put them ahead, 64-62, with 3:31 to go. Williams tied it for the Golden Eagles at 66-66 with 1:29 to go, but Chico State scored the final three points. Williams had a good look at a game-tying 3-pointer with seven seconds left that looked like it was going in, but rattled out instead and Chico State got the rebound and dribbled out the clock.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday in an exhibition game at Long Beach State and will resume CCA play next Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona.
