LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made a nice third-quarter charge to get back into Thursday's game against Cal State East Bay, but couldn't quite complete the job in the fourth.
The Golden Eagles closed to within three points, but allowed the first 10 points of the fourth quarter and fell to the Pioneers, 67-56, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-13, 4-12 CCAA) had some impressive moments in front of a large Homecoming crowd, but the Golden Eagles just weren't able to overtake the Pioneers (10-12, 7-9 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles recovered somewhat in the fourth quarter and narrowed the 13-point deficit down to five points, but couldn't get any closer down the stretch.
Mackenzie Barnes had 11 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Christine Delapina had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Rachael DiRegolo had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Elayshia Woolridge had 19 points, three rebounds and five assists to lead four Pioneers in double figures.
Alysssa Fisher had seven points and four assists, while
Madison Adams had six points.
Cal State LA shot just 29.3 percent for the game (17-of-58) and were just 3-of-13 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) and made 7-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 19-of-27 from the free-throw line, while Cal State East Bay was 10-of-11. Cal State East Bay had a 46-26 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA forced 21 turnovers and committed only eight.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as six points in the second quarter, 17-11, after a 3-pointer by Delapina and a basket by Fisher. The Pioneers, though, went on a 13-0 run and never looked back. Cal State East Bay led 28-19 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles had a nice run at the end of the third period and pulled to within three points after a pair of free throws by
Sacha Griffin and a three-point play by DiRegolo made it 43-40 entering the fourth.
After falling behind 53-40 early in the fourth, three free throws by Delapina, a three-point play by Adams and a basket by Delapina made it 53-48. The Golden Eagles kept the margin at five points at 55-50 after a basket by DiRegolo and 57-52 after a basket by Delapina with 1:49 to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
