SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team turned in another impressive performance Thursday in San Francisco State's Cox Stadium.
The No. 3 Golden Eagles remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-0 win over the Gators in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (14-0-1, 9-0-1 CCAA) recorded its fifth consecutive shutout and its 11th for the season. The Golden Eagles lead the nation in goals against average.
Manuel Garcia scored the lone goal in the opening half and second-half goals from
Cyrille Njomo and
Daniel Simonis increased the lead. The Golden Eagles didn't allow a shot in the first half and had an 11-3 edge for the game. Cal State LA also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Alexander Brems made two saves for the Golden Eagles for the shutout.
Cal State LA has clinched a first-round bye for the six-team conference tournament, while the Gators (9-6, 6-5 CCAA) have also qualified and will play a first-round game on Tuesday.
Garcia opened the scoring in the 43rd minute after a nice set-up from
Jose Tovar, who threaded a pass through a defender's legs to Garcia. Garcia's initial shot was saved by San Francisco State goalkeeper Peter Swinkels, but Garcia he was there to knock in the rebound for his first goal of the season.
Njomo made it 2-0 in the 67th minute with a spectacular goal. Tovar set up this score, too, with a nifty pass to Njomo, who fired a left-footed shot that curved beautifully inside the far post just under the crossbar for his second goal of the season.
Simonis made it 3-0 in the 80th minute when he drilled a free kick from just outside the box into the net for his third goal of the season.
Cal State LA will conclude the regular season on Saturday with a road game at Humboldt State beginning at 11:30 a.m. A win or tie will clinch a regular-season conference championship for the Golden Eagles.
