Golden Eagles Get A Good Start For First CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team led from start to finish and picked up its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory of the season.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of the game and then held off repeated charges from Cal State San Marcos in a 75-69 win Saturday in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-3, 1-2 CCAA) led by as many as 14 points in the first half while settling for a 41-32 halftime lead and then made key plays down the stretch to secure the victory.

Shacquille Dawkins scored 17 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye hit all five of his field-goal attempts, including three 3-pointers, to finish with 15 points, Fard Muhammad had 15 points and Khalil Williams had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Blake Seits led Cal State San Marcos (4-5, 0-3 CCAA) with a game-high 23 points, while Jayce McCain had 15 points.

Sean Estes and Michael Wright had six points each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 39.7 percent for the game (25-of-63) and made 11-of-34 attempts from 3-point range (32.4 percent). Cal State San Marcos shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) and made 8-of-31 from 3-point range (25.8 percent). Cal State LA had a 39-36 rebounding edge and committed only six turnovers to eight for the Cougars. 

Estes hit a 3-pointer to open the game, Dawkins followed with a 3-pointer and Muhammad hit two 3-pointers to stake the Golden Eagles to a quick 12-2 lead. A pair of free throws by Wright gave the Golden Eagles a 17-5 lead and a layup by Wright gave them their biggest lead, 21-7. Cal State LA settled for a 41-32 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles saw the lead get cut to 50-48 before a basket by Ajiboye and two free throws by Williams boosted the lead back to 54-48. A 3-pointer by Williams and layups by Wright and CJ Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 61-51 lead. A layup by Dawkins put the Golden Eagles ahead, 69-58, with three minutes to go and free throws by Muhammad and Williams in the final minute closed out the victory.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a conference game against San Francisco State at 7:30 p.m.
