LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team celebrated its 14 seniors on Saturday, but at the end of the day, the Golden Eagles also had to endure another heartbreaking defeat.
The Golden Eagles got a game-tying goal late in regulation against UC San Diego, but the Tritons converted a penalty kick in the second overtime period to take a 2-1 decision at University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-6-1, 3-5-1 CCAA) lost for the third time this season in extra time and the second time in a second overtime.
UC San Diego (14-1-1, 9-1-1 CCAA) remains in second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the victory.
The Tritons had a 26-14 advantage in shots, but most of that edge was earned in the first half when they had a 13-3 edge. The Golden Eagles began to find their footing in the second half and probably had their best run of play after falling behind, 1-0.
After Kameryn Hoban gave the Tritons a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute, the Golden Eagles tied it just six minutes later on a beautiful goal by
Adyson Willett off an outstanding free kick from distance by
Nicolette Elliott.
Both defenses took over in the overtime periods and didn't allow many chances, but UC San Diego got one in the 104th minute on a foul in the box and Natalie Saddic converted the penalty kick to win the game.
UC San Diego had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Amanda Leal made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Angelica Ramos made four saves for the Tritons. Willett had a team-high four shots for the Golden Eagles.
Paulina Chaidez and
Natalie Reynoso took two shots each.
