HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team used another big rally to remain unbeaten and start California Collegiate Athletic Association play on a high note.
The Golden Eagles (9-0, 1-0) stormed back from two sets down to outlast Cal State East Bay (4-5, 0-1 CCAA), 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-12 Friday night in Pioneer Gym in the conference opener for both teams. Cal State LA improved to 3-0 in five-set matches this season and rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the second time.
The Golden Eagles were the Comeback Kids once again.
Four Golden Eagles reached double figures in kills and Cal State LA was able to turn the match completely around after Cal State East Bay took the first two sets.
Mickayla Sherman had a team-high 14 digs and 16 digs to lead the way, while
Karla Santos had 13 kills and 10 digs.
Alejandra Negron also had 13 kills and 10 digs and
Daisy Crenshaw had 12 kills and five blocks.
Daisia LaBrie had nine kills and three blocks.
Cal State LA had a 66-45 edge in kills and hit at a .167 percentage to .082 for the Pioneers. The Golden Eagles had three service aces and 11 errors, while the Pioneers had two aces and six errors. Cal State East Bay had a 12-11 advantage in blocks.
Kelsey Molnar had 50 set assists and seven digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 22 digs.
The Golden Eagles never trailed in the fifth and deciding set. A kill by LaBrie and an attack error broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Santos and two more attack errors boosted the lead to 9-5, while a kill by Crenshaw and an ace by
Riley Morland made it 12-7. A kill by Sherman gave the Golden Eagles a 13-8 lead, an attack error got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-9 and, after Cal State East Bay scored three straight points, a kill by LaBrie ended the match.
After dropping the first two sets, the Golden Eagles kicked things into high gear. Cal State LA trailed early in the third set, 3-1, but scored four straight points to break an 8-8 tie and led the rest of the way. A kill by Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles a 17-12 lead and a block by Negron opened up a 23-15 advantage. Back-to-back kills by Sherman ended the set.
Cal State LA trailed early as well in the fourth set, 3-2, but scored three straight points to take the lead for good. Consecutive kills by Negron gave the Golden Eagles a 17-14 lead and Cal State LA was able to close out the set. A kill by Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-18 and a block by Crenshaw sent the match to the decisive fifth set.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match at San Francisco State.
