SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept rolling Saturday night with one of its best offensive showings of the season in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles (10-0, 2-0 CCAA) hit at a sizzling .303 percentage and swept past the Gators (8-2, 1-1 CCAA), 25-19, 25-18, 25-15 in The Swamp. Cal State LA's 10-0 start is its best since an 11-0 start in 2005.
Mickayla Sherman had 11 kills, 10 digs and two blocks to lead a balanced Cal State LA attack.
Daisy Portillo had 10 kills and four digs and
Daisy Crenshaw had nine kills and five blocks while hitting at a .562 percentage.
Cal State LA had a 44-28 advantage in kills in the three sets and hit .303 compared to just .101 for the Gators. The Golden Eagles also had eight aces to three for the Gators and had a 5-4 edge in blocks.
Daisia LaBrie had seven kills and three digs, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 21 digs.
Kelsey Molnar had 35 set assists and four service aces and keyed a match-deciding 9-0 run in the third set from the service line.
Alejandra Negron had five kills and nine digs.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to big early leads in each of the first two sets, but had to rally from an early hole to complete the sweep in the third.
Cal State LA led 5-1 in the first set and never trailed. San Francisco State was able to even the score at 9-9, but the Golden Eagles got a kill from Sherman, a block by Negron and Crenshaw and an attack error and led the rest of the way. An ace by
Karla Santos put the Golden Eagles ahead, 20-15, and kills by Sherman and Crenshaw boosted the lead to 23-17. The Golden Eagles closed out the set on a kill by Sherman and a San Francisco State error.
Cal State LA jumped out to leads of 9-2 and 11-3 in the second set and never looked back. After the Gators closed to within 17-15, a service error, an attack error, a kill by LaBrie and an ace by
Riley Morland pushed the lead to 21-15. Back-to-back kills by Portillo got the Golden Eagles to set point and a service error by the Gators ended the set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 6-0 and 8-2 in the final set, but battled back to take a 12-11 lead. After the Gators evened the set at 12-12, the Golden Eagles rattled off the next nine points to put the match out of reach. Molnar began serving at 13-12 and finished the run with an ace that made it 21-12. A kill by Portillo ended the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
