TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team was golden in an exciting back-and-forth California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Stanislaus State.
After both sides had excellent opportunities to end the game, it look a magnificent play from
Paulina Chaidez and
Irma Pinzon to lift the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 win over the Warriors in Warrior Stadium. Cal State LA (4-1-1, 1-0-1 CCAA) played into a second overtime period for the second straight game and got a much-needed decision on Sunday in the 106th minute.
Chaidez, who scored the first goal of the game in the first half, set up the winning goal with a strong run down the left side of the field. After eluding a Stanislaus State defender just outside the box, she lofted in a beautiful cross that was headed into the net by Pinzon right in front of the goal. There were a host of players from each team in the area, but Pinzon was able to leap high and head the ball just inside the near post.
Chaidez had scored the game's first goal when she was able to control a deflection and fire off a shot inside the box for her second goal of the season.
Stanislaus State (4-2, 1-1 CCAA) had a 26-13 advantage in shots, including a 13-3 edge in the first half and a 6-0 advantage in the first overtime period. The Warriors also received a penalty kick in the 58th minute, but, for the second straight game, Cal State LA goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado came up big and denied the attempt. This time, she stopped a shot by Stanislaus State's Mayah Chambers to keep the Golden Eagles ahead.
The Warriors eventually got the equalizer in the 82nd minute on a goal by Sadie Ortiz. She was able to dive and head a cross from Chambers into the net for her second goal of the season.
Cal State LA had some opportunities at the end of regulation, but Stanislaus State's Haley Crook made saves on bids by
Faith Baumgartner and
Ashtyn Bracamonte in the waning seconds to send the game into overtime.
The Golden Eagles survived a flurry in the first overtime when a shot by Chambers hit the crossbar and the follow-up rebound was cleared away by the defense.
Early in the second overtime, Stanislaus State's Reyana Plancarte hit the crossbar and a rebound attempt by Ilena Rivera was saved by Maldonado.
Cal State LA began to take control of possession at the midway point of the second OT period. A pair of corner kicks by
Kimberly Mendez were defended by the Warriors, but the Golden Eagles came right back down the field with Chaidez leading the charge and setting up the game-winner.
Maldonado had another outstanding game, recording nine saves, including the penalty kick. She had five saves, including a penalty kick, in a 1-1 tie at Chico State on Friday.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Humboldt State on 7 p.m.
