CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team battled through some heavy adversity and battled to an impressive tie at Chico State in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both schools.
The Golden Eagles, despite being a player down after a first-half red card, scored first and earned a point after a 1-1 tie with the Wildcats Friday in Chico. Cal State LA (3-1-1, 0-1-1) became the first team to score a goal against Chico State (1-0-4) this season.
Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Leslie Ramirez in the 39th minute and Chico State got the equalizer in the 77th minute from Erin Woods.
Adriana Maldonado was a big reason the Golden Eagles were able to earn a tie. She made five saves, including a big stop on a penalty shot after the red card. She made four of her five saves in the second half while helping the Golden Eagles get the game into overtime.
Cal State LA had a 7-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but Chico State wound up with a 20-15 edge for the game. Chico State also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Ramirez scored her first goal of the season while putting the Golden Eagles ahead, 1-0. She was able to loft a one-time shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the top shelf for the goal.
Woods tied it with a perfectly-placed shot from 24 yards out in the second half.
Paulina Chaidez had a team-high four shots, including two on goal. She had a chance in the final seconds of regulation in an attempt to win it.
Ramirez had three shots, including two on goal.
Ashtyn Bracamonte had a pair of shots, both on goal, while
Paulina Senices and
Madison Mader also had shots on goal.
Cal State LA will return to action with a game at Stanislaus State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. That match will be televised nationally on
