Golden Eagles Rally For A Perfect Tourney Finale

IRVINE -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team staged a spirited rally Saturday night to complete a perfect showing at the two-day Concordia-Irvine Invitational.

The Golden Eagles stormed back from two sets down to outlast Pacific West Conference favorite Azusa Pacific, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-12 to complete the tournament with a 4-0 record. Earlier in the day, all 15 players contribute in a three-set victory over American International.

Cal State LA starts the season with a 4-0 record for the first time since 2015.

Karla Santos had another big match for the Golden Eagles, leading the way with 21 kills, 19 digs, one service ace and three blocks. Alejandra Negron had 12 kills, one ace and five blocks and delivered the kill that ended the match.

Mickayla Sherman had 10 kills, nine blocks, seven digs and five blocks, while Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and eight blocks.

Cal State LA had a 61-52 advantage in kills and a 16-14 edge in blocks. Cal State LA hit at a .157 percentage to .146 for the Cougars (2-2).

Bailey Anderson had 29 set assists, one ace and nine digs, while Kelsey Molnar had 22 set assists. Daisia LaBrie had six kills and six blocks.

Cal State LA started slowly, but almost pulled off a big rally in the opening set. The Golden Eagles trailed from the outset, 9-3, and were down 24-18 before scoring five straight points to make it close. Kills by Sherman and Crenshaw, another kill from Sherman, a block from Negron and an attack error made it 24-23 before the Cougars finally nailed down the set point.

The Golden Eagles led as late as 15-14 in the second set, but the Cougars won the next four points and kept the momentum to take a 2-0 lead.

Cal State LA fought to get back into the match in the third set. The set was tied at 13-13, but Cal State LA scored the next three points and led the rest of the way. After leading 20-18, the Golden Eagles took advantage of a service error and got a kill from Sherman, a block by Crenshaw and Sherman and a kill by Negron extended the edge to 24-18. A kill by Sherman closed out the set.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the fourth set and held off an Azusa Pacific rally that cut the margin to 19-17. Kills by LaBrie and Santos boosted the lead back to 21-17 and a kill by Crenshaw sent the match to a fifth set.

An ace by Caitlyn Bato broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good in the final set. A strong serving run by Molnar helped the Golden Eagles take a 13-8 lead, but Azusa Pacific scored the next three points to make things close. A kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-11 and a kill by Negron wrapped up the win.

Earlier on Saturday, the Golden Eagles improved to 3-0 with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-20 win over American International.

Santos had nine kills, two service aces and 12 digs to lead Cal State LA. Crenshaw had eight kills and hit at a .500 percentage, Negron had six kills and nine digs, Victoria Duarte had five kills and Erianna Williams and Daisy Portillo had four kills each.

Cal State LA had a 43-30 edge in kills and hit at a .357 percentage to .130 for American International.

Anderson had 17 set assists, Molnar had 13 set assists and Jade Horder had eight set assists for the Golden Eagles. Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 18 digs.

The Golden Eagles led for nearly the entire match. Cal State LA extended a 15-12 lead in the opening set to 18-12 following a pair of American International errors and a kill by Santos. An ace by Santos got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-15 and an attack error finished the set.

Cal State LA was tied at 15-15 in the second set before a kill by Williams, a block by Negron and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles an 18-15 edge and they maintained an advantage the rest of the way. A kill by Duarte gave the Golden Eagles a 24-20 edge and, after three straight points by American International, a kill by Santos ended the set.

The Golden Eagles maintained a comfortable lead for most of the third set. After American International closed to within 21-19, a kill by Portillo, an attack error and a block by Duarte and Portillo got the Golden Eagles to match point. A kill by Duarte ended the contest.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in the D2 West Region Showcase at Dominican. The Golden Eagles will play four matches against West Region opponents over two days.
