SAN RAFAEL -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team opened play in the D2 West Region Showcase on Friday with a pair of important wins over PacWest Conference teams.
The Golden Eagles began a busy day with a come-from-behind five-set win over host Dominican in the morning and then knocked off Point Loma in four sets, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, in the afternoon at the Conlan Center. Cal State LA (6-0) remained unbeaten on the season and is undefeated through its first six matches for the first time since 2015.
Karla Santos, who was the Most Valuable Player at the Concordia-Irvine Invitational last week, had 18 kills and 13 digs and hit at a .308 clip in the win over Point Loma.
Mickayla Sherman had her best match of the season with 14 kills and a .520 hitting percentage.
Daisy Portillo had eight kills and four blocks.
Cal State LA had a slim 52-51 edge in kills, but had only 13 attack errors and posted a hitting percentage of .298 to just .176 for the Sea Lions. The Golden Eagles also had a 10-3 advantage in blocks and a 5-2 edge in service aces.
Bailey Anderson had 44 set assists and a service ace, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 12 digs and one service ace.
Daisy Crenshaw had six kills and six blocks.
After splitting the first two sets, the Golden Eagles took control in the third frame. Cal State LA never trailed in the set and jumped out to an 18-10 lead after a service ace by Portillo and back-to-back kills from Sherman. Cal State LA got to set point at 24-16 following a kill by Crenshaw and closed out the set with a kill by Sherman.
The Golden Eagles used an attack error by Point Loma and a kill by Sherman to break a 5-5 tie and led the rest of the way in the fourth and final set. A kill by
Daisia LaBrie and back-to-back kills by Sherman opened up a 19-12 lead and Cal State LA promptly closed out the match. A block by Santos and Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-15 and a kill by Santos completed the contest.
Earlier in the day, the Golden Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit and outlasted host Dominican, 20-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 15-10.
Santos, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week, had 20 kills and 12 digs to lead the Golden Eagles and LaBrie had 16 kills and two blocks. The Golden Eagles emerged from a tight decision in the fourth set and then jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the fifth frame and went on to the win.
Cal State LA had a 60-45 edge in kills, but also committed 35 attack errors to 15 for the Penguins. The Golden Eagles hit at a .152 percentage to .221 for Dominican. Cal State LA had 13 service aces and 15 errors, while Dominican had four aces and 10 errors. Dominican had a 7-5 edge in blocks.
Sherman had nine kills and Portillo had eight kills for the Golden Eagles, while Anderson had 36 set assists and nine digs. Suarez had a team-high 25 digs, while
Caitlyn Bato had four service aces, including three in the final set, and 12 digs.
After dropping the first and third sets, Cal State LA survived a tough battle in the fourth set to stay in the match. The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 16-15, but a kill by Santos and an ace by
Janessa Mata erased the deficit. From a 17-17 tie, kills by Santos and Sherman put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. A Dominican service error and a kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a service error eventually ended the set.
Cal State LA scored the first five points of the fifth set behind the serving of Bato, who had three aces in the stretch. Two kills by Santos and one by Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles an 8-1 lead. Dominican got as close as 13-10, but kills by LaBrie and Santos ended the contest.
After the later match on Friday against Point Loma, the Golden Eagles will conclude the tournament with matches on Saturday against Concordia-Portland (8:30 a.m.) and Alaska (3:15 p.m.).
