IRVINE -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team did well with an early wakeup call Friday and then closed out the first day of the two-day Concordia-Irvine Invitational with a big win over the hosts.
The Golden Eagles, with an 8:45 a.m. start time against Colorado Mesa, won the final two sets to post a 25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22 victory in their opening match before sweeping Concordia-Irvine, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 in a contest that began at 8 p.m.
Karla Santos, the California Collegiate Athletic Association and NCAA Division II West Region Freshman of the Year in 2017, had 20 kills and nine digs to lead an impressive performance against Concordia. Santos hit at a .310 percentage.
Alejandra Negron had nine kills and 10 digs,
Daisia LaBrie had eight kills and one block and
Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills and three blocks.
Cal State LA (2-0) had a hefty 52-26 advantage in kills and hit at a .205 hitting percentage while limiting Concordia (1-1) to just .108 hitting.
Bailey Anderson had a strong match with 38 set assists, while
Jeshmarie Suarez and
Mickayla Sherman had 12 digs each. Suarez also had six set assists and Sherman had five kills.
The Golden Eagles trailed early in the opening set, 9-3, but rebounded quickly and tied things at 12-12 after a kill by Crenshaw. Cal State LA took its first lead of the set at 17-16 after another kill by Crenshaw and then took control with a 6-0 run that turned an 18-17 deficit into a 23-18 lead. LaBrie had two kills and a block with Negron in quick succession and a kill by Sherman made it 24-19. A kill by Santos ended the set.
The second set was close throughout and was tied at 22-22 before a Concordia service error and kills by Santos and
Daisy Portillo gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in sets.
Cal State LA trailed early in the third set, but opened up a 17-10 advantage and never looked back. A kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by Santos closed out the win.
In the morning win over Colorado Mesa, Santos led a balanced Cal State LA attack with 16 kills and 14 digs, while LaBrie had 10 kills and three blocks and Sherman had 10 kills and eight digs.
Anderson had 24 set assists and nine digs, while a returning
Kelsey Molnar had 15 set assists and one service ace. Negron had a team-high 17 digs to go along with three kills and five blocks and Suarez had 13 digs, three set assists and two service aces. Crenshaw had five kills and five blocks.
Cal State LA had a 46-42 edge in kills and an 8-7 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .151 percentage to .116 for the Mavericks. Cal State LA had 10 service aces and 13 service errors, while Colorado Mesa had four aces and eight errors.
The Golden Eagles took the opening set while leading for most of it. Cal State LA saw a 20-15 lead sliced to 20-18, but, after a timeout, three straight kills by Santos pushed the lead to 23-18. Another kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 before a block by Negron and Crenshaw ended the set.
After dropping the second set, the Golden Eagles rebounded nicely in the third. The Golden Eagles opened up a 14-9 lead and never really looked back. Colorado Mesa got as close as 21-18, but a kill by Sherman and a pair of attack errors by Colorado Mesa after serves from
Jade Horder, made it 24-18. A kill by Sherman gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Cal State LA opened up a 20-14 lead in the fourth set and closed out the match. A kill by Crenshaw made it 23-19 and an attack error got Cal State LA to match point at 24-20. Colorado Mesa closed to within 24-22, but a service error by the Mavericks ended the contest.
Cal State LA will play matches against American International (1:15 p.m.) and Azusa Pacific (5:45 p.m.) on Saturday to complete play in the first tournament of the season.
