Golden Eagles Turn It Up Down The Stretch And Win

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team couldn't hold a big lead early, but the Golden Eagles were clutch down the stretch of a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles lost all of an 18-point lead, but rallied smartly from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter and beat the Pioneers, 72-64, Friday night in Pioneer Gymnasium. Cal State LA (12-12, 11-7 CCAA) pulled back into a fourth-place tie with Chico State in the conference race with four games remaining. The Golden Eagles won their fourth straight game and completed a season-sweep of the Pioneers (13-12, 9-10 CCAA).

Rikke Fabricius had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles. She converted a go-ahead three-point play to break a 58-58 tie with 3:45 remaining.

Madison Adams had 12 points and Rebeccah DiRegolo had 11 points and three rebounds.

Morgan Greene had a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers, while Elayshia Woolridge had 15 points.

Christine Delapina had all five of her points in the final 1:39 as she helped secure the win. Delapina also had nine rebounds and seven assists. Mackenzie Barnes had seven points and five rebounds, while Alyssa Fisher hit both of her 3-point attempts and finished with six points.

Cal State LA shot 44.6 percent for the game (25-of-56) and was 7-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 15-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) and was 4-of-18 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 16-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 41-33 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 14 for the Pioneers.

The Golden Eagles had a tremendous first quarter and built up a 25-15 lead after 10 minutes and took a 38-20 lead after a 3-pointer by Adams with 2:56 to play in the first half. That shot followed 3-pointers by Barnes and Fisher that fueled a 9-0 run.

Cal State East Bay, though, steadily fought its way back into the game. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 38-29 at halftime after scoring the final nine points of the second period and then tied the game at 46-46 in the final minute of the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Adams gave the Golden Eagles a 49-47 lead entering the final period.

The Pioneers opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 57-51 lead with 6:54 to go before the Golden Eagles battled back. Fabricius converted a three-point play to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 58-57 before a free throw by Greene tied it for a final time. Fabricius converted another three-point play to give the Golden Eagles a 61-58 edge and they never looked back. Rebeccah DiRegolo hit a pair of free throws and Fabricius hit a pair of free throws to bump the lead to 65-58 with two minutes left. After Greene scored to make it 65-60, Delapina hit a jumper and then a free throw to increase the lead to 68-60 in the final minute.

Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
