Golden Eaglss Clinch Tourney Spot With Road Win

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team kept the good times rolling Saturday night and clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles won their fifth straight game with a 68-57 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in The Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (13-12, 12-7 CCAA) pulled one-half game ahead of idle Chico State for fourth place in the CCAA and is now just one-half game back of Humboldt State for third. The Golden Eagles are also just one game behind second-place Cal Poly Pomona with three games remaining.

Cal State LA can finish anywhere between second and fifth in the conference standings. The top four teams will host first-round tournament games.

The Golden Eagles will be making an appearance in the tournament for the third straight season and for the sixth time in the past seven years.

Rikke Fabricius had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures on Saturday. Christine Delapina had 16 points, four rebounds and four assists and Rebeccah DiRegolo had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Courtney Keaton had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Otters. Aubri Smith and Brianna Tucker had 14 points each.

Madison Adams, Alyssa Fisher and Rachael DiRegolo had six points each.

Cal State LA shot well, making 23-of-46 field-goal attempts, including 8-of-15 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 14-of-18 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot just 36.9 percent and made just 8-of-25 from behind the arc.

Cal State LA had a 34-32 rebounding edge and committed 21 turnovers to 16 for the Otters.

The two teams struggled for points in the opening quarter, which ended in an 8-8 tie. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Delapina made it 27-23 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the third quarter but a layup by Rebeccah DiRegolo broke a 35-35 tie and started a 7-0 run that included a basket by Rachael DiRegolo and a 3-pointer by Adams. The Golden Eagles outscored the Otters, 23-12, in the period and took a 46-39 lead into the final quarter.

The Otters sliced the lead down to one point twice in the final period, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Fisher and Adams stretched the lead back to 60-53 with 4:36 to go. Cal State Monterey Bay closed to within three points, 60-57, with 2:49 to go, but didn't score again. Delapina's basket made it 62-57 with 2:19 to go and Delapina made four free throws and Fabricius hit two in the final 1:24 to account for the final margin.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with its final home game of the season, the annual Homecoming Game against Stanislaus State.
