Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Unable To Overcome A Slow Start

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team fell behind early and saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.

The Golden Eagles allowed the first seven points of the game and trailed by as many as 16 points in the first quarter of a 71-63 loss to Cal State San Marcos in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Thursday. Cal State LA (14-13, 13-8 CCAA) tumbled out of a share of third place and is now one-half game behind Humboldt State and one-half game ahead of Chico State.

The Golden Eagles, who have already clinched a tournament spot, need to finish in the top four in order to host a first-round CCAA Championship Tournament game.

Cal State San Marcos (8-17, 8-13 CCAA) earned a season split with Cal State LA after a strong performance on Thursday. The Cougars led from start to finish and survived a determined Cal State LA rally that trimmed the deficit to three points entering the fourth quarter. The Cougars opened the final quarter with a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Rachael DiRegolo had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Rikke Fabricius had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Christine Delapina had nine points and four rebounds.

Raegan Lillie had 14 points and made all six of her field-goal attempts to lead the Cougars. Savannah Camp had 12 points and six rebounds and Lupe Cruz had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Mackenzie Barnes and Madison Adams had seven points each and Chiderah Uzowuru had six points.

The Golden Eagles gave up the first seven points of the game before Rachael DiRegolo got them on the board four minutes into the game. Cal State LA faced its biggest deficit of the game, 25-9, before three free throws by Fabricius and a jumper by Barnes made it 25-14 after one quarter.

A 3-pointer by Alyssa Fisher cut the deficit to 30-22 and DiRegolo scored seven straight points to bring the Golden Eagles to within 35-31 before the Cougars took a 37-31 halftime lead.

Adams hit a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to make it 48-44 and a pair of free throws by Fabricius got the Golden Eagles to within 48-46. Cal State LA trailed, 49-46, entering the fourth quarter.

Cal State LA, though, was hit by a 14-2 run to open the fourth period and Cal State San Marcos led the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will conclude its regular season on Saturday at first-place UC San Diego.
