Golden Eagles Finish Regular Season With A Battle

LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put up a determined battle, but fell short to California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champion UC San Diego on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both programs.

The Golden Eagles led by one point at halftime and had a spirited rally in the fourth quarter, but a rough third period was the difference in a 75-71 loss to the Tritons in RIMAC Arena. Cal State LA (14-14, 13-9 CCAA) slipped to fifth place in the conference standings and will open the CCAA Championship Tournament on the road at Chico State in a first-round game on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles finished one game behind third-place Humboldt State and Chico State.

Cal State LA got a career-high 29 points and seven rebounds from its lone senior, Rikke Fabricius. She did her scoring on the inside and outside, knocking down a career-high five 3-pointers in seven attempts. She scored 14 of the team's 18 first-quarter points and 21 of the team's 35 first-half points. Christine Delapina also had an outstanding game with 16 points, three rebounds and six assists. Delapina had 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles attempted an impressive comeback.

Mikayla Williams scored 26 points to lead UC San Diego, while Dalayna Sampton had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Tanita had 10 points, including seven successful free throws in eight attempts down the stretch to help the Tritons preserve their lead.

Madison Adams had eight points and Alyssa Fisher had six points for the Golden Eagles. Adams hit two 3-pointers in the final 1:34 and Fisher added one in the final minute to get the Golden Eagles close.

Cal State LA started well and took an early 14-9 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers by Fabricius. Fisher hit a pair of free throws to give Cal State LA its biggest lead, 18-12, before the Tritons made it 18-14 after one period.

UC San Diego opened the second period with an 11-2 run to take a 25-20 lead, but the Golden Eagles hung tough, taking a 31-29 lead on a layup by Mackenzie Barnes and then grabbing a 35-34 halftime lead after a pair of free throws by Fisher and a basket by Delapina to close the half.

The Tritons, though, scored the first 10 points of the third quarter and threatened to break the game open. A three-point play by Fabricius got the Golden Eagles on the board to make it 44-38 and a 3-pointer by Fisher kept the Golden Eagles within 46-41. Cal State LA was outscored in the period, 19-8, and trailed 53-43 entering the fourth.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as 12 points in the final period, but a 7-0 run thanks to a pair of free throws by Chiderah Uzowuru, a 3-pointer by Fabricius and two free throws by Delapina made it 64-59. Adams hit a 3-pointer to bring the Golden Eagles to within 66-62 with 1:34 to go and Delapina, Adams and Fisher hit 3-pointers to get the Golden Eagles close in the final minute.
