Golden Eagles Deserve A Break Today After Big Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team will get a much-deserved break after posting its third big victory in the past four days.

The Golden Eagles got another sensational game from Chiderah Uzowuru and handed Cal State Dominguez Hills its first California Collegiate Athletic Association loss in a 75-65 victory Wednesday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-3, 3-2 CCAA) started this grueling stretch with a win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, continued it with a first-ever win over Seattle Pacific on Monday and finished it with the big conference victory over the Toros on Wednesday.

Uzowuru set a new career high with 27 points and finished with more than 20 points for a fourth straight game. The last Cal State LA player to accomplish that feat was Tessondra Williams in 2012-13. Williams scored 20 or more in five straight that season.

Uzowuru also had eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 34 sensational minutes.

Madison Adams also had a great game and had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Rachael DiRegolo had 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Nautica Morrow had 16 points to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-3, 2-1 CCAA).

Mackenzie Barnes had nine points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA was efficient on offense and shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) for the game. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-8 from 3-point range with Adams hitting 3-of-6. Barnes had the other 3-pointer in her only attempt. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) and was just 6-of-20 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 13-of-20 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 9-of-15.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 38-36 and committed 17 turnovers to 15 for the Toros.

The Golden Eagles trailed after one period, 21-17, but turned things around in the second period to take a 37-33 lead by halftime. The Toros pulled to within 49-47 after three quarters, but the Golden Eagles came up big in the final period to pull away.

Cal State LA held just a 51-49 lead with 8:53 to go, but Adams hit a 3-pointer to start a game-deciding 13-2 run that determined the outcome. She followed with a fastbreak basket, Rachael DiRegolo scored inside off a nice pass from Adams, Uzowuru scored on a layup and then set up DiRegolo for a layup and Uzowuru followed with a jumper to make it 64-51 with 4:36 to go. Cal State Dominguez Hills never got closer than eight points after that.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 29, with a home game against Cal State San Marcos at 1 p.m.
