Golden Eagles Unable To Close Out Marathon Battle

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team let one get away Saturday in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association game.

The Golden Eagles were unable to close out the game in regulation and ultimately fell to Cal State San Marcos, 89-87, in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-4, 3-3 CCAA) held a four-point lead with 10 seconds to go in regulation, but missed free throws and an ill-advised foul going for a rebound enabled Cal State San Marcos (7-3, 4-2 CCAA) to get the game into extra time and the Cougars held off a last-ditch effort from the Golden Eagles to get the game into a fourth overtime period.

Chiderah Uzowuru had a career-high 33 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles and scored more than 20 points for a fifth straight game. That was last done by Tessondra Williams in the 2012-13 season.

Rachael DiRegolo had 20 points and 10 rebounds, including the last baskets in the first and second overtimes that extended the game. Madison Adams had 13 points and Mackenzie Barnes had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Emma Forel had a big game for the Cougars and posted a 27-point, 18-rebound double-double. Akayla Hackson had 22 points and Stephanie Custodio had 17 points.

Christine Delapina had eight points, four rebounds and six assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 41.1 percent for the game (30-of-73) and made 4-of-10 from 3-point range. Cal State San Marcos shot 36.8 percent (28-of-76) and knocked down 9-of-27 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 23-of-33 from the free-throw line, but just 9-of-16 in the second half. Cal State San Marcos was 24-of-33. The Cougars had a 54-43 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 11 for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 10 points in the first half and held a 35-29 advantage at halftime, but scored only nine points in the third quarter to fall behind 47-44 entering the fourth. Hackson hit three free throws to give the Cougars a 61-60 edge before a pair of free throws by Uzowuru, a jumper by Barnes and a free throw by Alyssa Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 64-60 lead with 42 seconds left. Hackson hit a 3-pointer to make it 64-63 before a single free throw by Barnes made it 65-63. After a missed free throw with three seconds to go, the Golden Eagles were called for a loose-ball foul and Dynnah Buckner hit a pair of free throws to send it into overtime.

A layup by Delapina and a free throw by DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles a 70-67 lead early in overtime, but the Cougars rallied to take a 77-75 edge late before a layup by DiRegolo after a nice assist from Delapina sent the game into a second overtime.

There were only eight points scored in the second overtime period and a layup by DiRegolo off a pass from Delapina with 1:28 to go sent the game into a third overtime.

A layup by Uzowuru gave the Golden Eagles their last lead at 87-86 with 1:33 to go in the third overtime period, but Baylee Olsen hit a pair of free throws and Cheyenne Ertz made a free throw to provide the Cougars with their final margin. Uzowuru had a good look at a potential game-tying layup and tip by Barnes just missed at the buzzer.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against UC San Diego at 5:30 p.m.
