LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team turned in a performance for the history books Monday night.
The Golden Eagles, playing on consecutive days, jumped out to a big first-half lead and went on to an impressive 68-54 victory over Seattle Pacific Monday in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-3) picked up its first-ever win over the Falcons. The Golden Eagles were 0-8 entering Monday's contest against Seattle Pacific, which is one of the premier programs in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Chiderah Uzowuru had a sensational game to lead the way, pouring in a career-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds, two assists and five steals. She now has three straight 20-point games after scoring 22 points at Northwest Nazarene on Dec. 8 and 22 against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles also got outstanding performances from
Alyssa Fisher, who had 13 points and four assists and
Mackenzie Barnes, who had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Carly Rataushk had a team-high 18 points and six rebounds for Seattle Pacific (3-5).
Madison Adams had eight points for the Golden Eagles and hit 2-of-3 from 3-point range and
Rachael DiRegolo had six points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Cal State LA held a 42-27 lead at halftime and led by as many as 24 points with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Seattle Pacific rallied to slice the deficit to 10 points in the fourth quarter, but by that time only two minutes remained.
Rachael DiRegolo scored a late basket and Uzowuru and
Christine Delapina hit four free throws in the final minute to preserve the double-digit margin.
Cal State LA shot 46.3 percent for the game (25-of-54), including 54 percent in the first half (18-of-33) while building the big lead. Seattle Pacific shot 39.3 percent for the game (24-of-61). The Golden Eagles were 3-of-13 from 3-point range, while the Falcons were just 4-of-22. Cal State LA was 15-of-20 from the free-throw line, while Seattle Pacific was just 2-of-7.
Cal State LA had a 39-31 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 16 for the Falcons.
The Golden Eagles took control of the game early, breaking a 6-6 tie with baskets from Fisher, Uzowuru, Barnes and another by Uzowuru to take a 14-6 lead after never looking back. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Adams and a basket by
Rebeccah DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles a 24-10 lead and Cal State LA settled for a 24-15 lead after the first quarter.
Cal State LA led by as many as 17 points and settled for a 15-point lead at halftime after a steal by Delapina led to a layup by Fisher and a 42-27 lead.
Four straight points by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 53-29, with 3:20 remaining in the third period, but Seattle Pacific came roaring back. The Falcons closed the quarter with a 12-2 run to make it 55-41 and got to within 11 points at 57-46 with 7:19 remaining after a three-point play by Rataushk.
Barnes, though, hit a basket to stop the run and three free throws in four attempts by Uzowuru boosted the lead back to 62-46 and Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday.
