Golden Eagles Start Quickly And Post Big Road Win

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put together a tremendous first-half performance and went on to post a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles raced out to a 41-14 lead by halftime and beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 62-42, Sunday in the Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (4-3, 2-2 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak and recorded its first road conference win of the season.

Chiderah Uzowuru had another big outing for the Golden Eagles, scoring a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. She had 12 points in the opening quarter while helping Cal State LA to a 21-8 lead.

Christine Delapina had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Madison Adams had 10 points and knocked down 2-of-5 from 3-point range.

Jordana Price had 14 points and Chyna Dews had 11 points for Cal State Monterey Bay (0-9, 0-6 CCAA).

Rachael DiRegolo had seven points, five rebounds and four blocks, while Alyssa Fisher also scored seven points.

Cal State LA shot 46.8 percent for the game (22-of-47) and limited the Otters to just 32.7 percent shooting (18-of-55). The Golden Eagles were 3-of-11 from 3-point range, while the Otters were just 1-of-14. Cal State LA was 15-of-18 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Monterey Bay was 5-of-12. Cal State LA had a 33-32 edge in rebounding and committed 20 turnovers to 18 for the Otters.

The Golden Eagles never trailed and took control of the game early. Delapina opened the scoring with a basket and after the Otters tied it at 2-2, the Golden Eagles scored the next nine points and never looked back. A basket by Alyssa Fisher made it 14-4 and a pair of free throws by Fisher made it 21-8 after one period.

Cal State LA then outscored the Otters, 20-6, in the second period to open up a 41-14 halftime lead. Madison Adams had two 3-pointers in the quarter to help fuel the run.

The Golden Eagles opened up a 32-point lead at 48-16 after a layup by Mackenzie Barnes, a 3-pointer by Delapina and a layup by Delapina. Cal State Monterey  Bay, though, closed out the third quarter with a 16-2 run to make it 50-32.

Cal State Monterey Bay closed to within 53-39 with 6:40 remaining, but the Golden Eagles didn't allow a basket the rest of the way and pulled away again down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action on Monday with a home non-conference game against Seattle Pacific at 7 p.m.
