LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team started a bit slowly, but definitely found its stride Saturday in the Golden Eagles' California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.
The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many 14 points in the first half before storming back to upend Stanislaus State, 80-60, in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-0, 1-0 CCAA) cut the deficit to three points by halftime and then outscored the Warriors, 50-27 in the second half.
Rachael DiRegolo had a sensational game to lead the Golden Eagles. She hit all eight of her field-goal attempts and all 10 of her free throws to finish with a career-high 26 points. She also had a game-high 12 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Madison Adams knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with a season-high 22 points, while
Mackenzie Barnes also had a season high with 10 points.
Lizzy Alexander had a team-high 15 points for Stanislaus State (0-3, 0-1 CCAA).
Christine Delapina had nine points, eight assists and three steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Alyssa Fisher had five points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Cal State LA shot 51.9 percent for the game (28-of-54), including a remarkable 69.2 percent in the second half (18-of-26). Stanislaus State shot 49 percent for the game (24-of-49). The Golden Eagles were 9-of-22 from 3-point range with Adams leading the way with a 6-of-10 performance. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-9 from 3-point range in the second half.
The Golden Eagles trailed, 25-11, early in the second period, but got to within 33-30 at halftime after a basket by DiRegolo.
Delapina opened the second half with a 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles to tie it and a layup by
Jo Ana Adams gave the Golden Eagles a 35-33 lead. The game was tied at 40-40 when
Madison Adams hit a 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Back-to-back baskets by DiRegolo were followed by a 3-pointer by Adams that pushed the lead to 52-42 and another 3-pointer by Adams right before the buzzer gave the Golden Eagles a 55-44 lead after three quarters.
Cal State LA opened the final quarter with a 14-4 run and led comfortably the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road conference game at Cal State San Bernardino.
