Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Bow Out Of NCAA Tourney In OT

AZUSA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team saw its outstanding season come to a sudden and unsatisfying end Saturday night in an NCAA Division II West Region Second Round game at Azusa Pacific.

The Golden Eagles got a game-tying goal from David Elizaga in the 62nd minute, but the Cougars scored six minutes into overtime and advanced to the regional final with a 2-1 victory at Cougar Field. Cal State LA (15-3-3), the No. 3 seed, ends its season one week after claiming its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship.

It was an entertaining and fast-paced game with both teams displaying their outstanding defenses and quick-attack offenses.

Azusa Pacific, which is ranked No. 8 in the nation, had a 13-8 edge in shots, although Cal State LA, ranked No. 18, did seem to have the bulk of the possession during the game. The Golden Eagles were able to string together passes on the attack, but Azusa Pacific's defense made it awfully hard to generate good scoring chances.

Cal State LA had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks and scored its only goal off a corner kick in the second half by Tim Klefisch.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on a goal by Arturo Astorga with an assist from Gabriel Costa.

The Golden Eagles was able to generate some good pressure after falling behind and that pressure was rewarded in the 62nd minute. Klefisch started the sequence with a corner kick and Leonardo Nogueira fired a shot that Azusa Pacific goalkeeper Brendan Fix was able to stop. Elizaga was able to eventually get to the loose ball and punch it into the net for his second goal of the season.

The game-winner came 5:50 into overtime. Astorga received a throw-in and pushed the ball down the right side before sending a pass into the box. Costa rifled the pass from about 15 yards out into the net for his 14th goal of the season.

Brems made six saves for the Golden Eagles, including a beauty in the 70th minute on a point-blank shot by Astorga. The rebound went to Rene Santos, but his shot was saved by the Cal State LA defense before it got to the goal.

Carlos Zarate had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, including a bid that went just over the crossbar in regulation.

Cal State LA finished its season with a 43-10 goal differential.
