No. 10 Golden Eagles Enjoy A Spirited Home Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's volleyball team kept the good times rolling Friday night against Chico State.

Backed by a Spirit Game crowd and a lot of student-athletes from other Cal State LA teams, the Golden Eagles swept past Chico State, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19, in University Gym. Cal State LA (19-1, 11-1 CCAA) remained one-half game behind Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA South Division with five matches remaining. The Golden Eagles are ranked 10th in the nation, their first top-10 national ranking since 2006.

Karla Santos had 11 kills and three blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Alejandra Negron had 11 kills, one ace and two blocks. Daisia LaBrie had eight kills and five blocks.

Kennedy Rice had eight kills to lead Chico State (12-10, 5-9 CCAA), while Brooke Fogel had a team-high 11 digs.

Kelsey Molnar had 39 set assists, one ace and two blocks, while Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 12 digs. Mickayla Sherman had three service aces to go along with seven kills.

Cal State LA had a 45-28 advantage in kills and hit at a .277 percentage to .184 for the Wildcats. The Golden Eagles also had a 7-1 edge in blocks and had seven aces with 11 errors. Chico State had one ace and five errors.

The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 16-15 in the opening set, but took advantage of a service error, an ace by Sherman and a kill by Santos to take the lead for good. A block by LaBrie and Molnar, a kill by Santos and a solo block by Santos pushed the lead to 20-17, kills by Molnar and Negron made it 23-18 and a kill by Daisy Crenshaw eventually gave the set to the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA trailed 18-16 in the second set, but got a kill by Santos, an ace from Caitlyn Bato, a block from Santos and Crenshaw and a ball-handling error to take a 20-18 advantage. Kills by Santos and Negron and an ace by Molnar pushed the lead to 23-19, a kill by Crenshaw made it 24-20 and a kill by Negron ended the set.

Cal State LA jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the third set and never looked back. The Golden Eagles led by at least five points the rest of the way and ended the contest on a kill by Sherman.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Stanislaus State beginning at 5 p.m.
