LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team enjoyed its return to its home court Saturday night as California Collegiate Athletic Association play resumed.
The Golden Eagles raced out to leads as large as 19 points and held off a stern rally from Cal State Dominguez Hills to post an important 79-72 win in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-10, 5-5 CCAA) saw its lead sliced to four points late in the game, but some outstanding free-throw shooting down the stretch from
Christine Delapina secured the win.
Rebeccah DiRegolo had 18 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Delapina finished with 17 points and was 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Rikke Fabricius had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while
Alyssa Fisher had 12 points and a season-high 10 assists in an outstanding performance.
Nautica Morrow had a tremendous game to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-8, 5-5 CCAA). Morrow had 25 points, four rebounds and seven assists. Zhane Carter had 18 points and Taylor Farris had 11 points.
Mackenzie Barnes had nine points and two assists for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot well for the game and connected on 58.1 percent of its shots (25-of-43). The Golden Eagles were an efficient 4-of-9 from 3-point range and outstanding at the free-throw line, going 25-of-29.
Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 39.2 percent (29-of-74) and was just 6-of-23 from 3-point range. The Toros were 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles had a slim 31-30 rebounding edge and won despite committing 23 turnovers to 13 for the Toros.
Cal State LA took control of the game with an 18-0 run that started with a 3-pointer by
Neele Steinort late in the first quarter and extended well into the second period. Steinort's 3-pointer erased a 14-13 deficit and picked up steam in the second quarter when Fisher hit back-to-back 3-pointers, DiRegolo converted a three-point play, Fabricius hit a layup, DiRegolo hit a layup and Fabricius made another layup to make it 31-14 with 6:23 remaining in the first half.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 37-18 after a basket by Barnes and settled for a 41-28 halftime lead.
Cal State LA kept double-digit leads for all of the third period and carried a 63-48 lead into the final period after four straight points from Delapina.
The Golden Eagles still had a 14-point lead, 72-58, with 3:16 to go, but the Toros went on a 12-2 run to close to within 74-70 with 33 seconds remaining. That's when Delapina took over, hitting four consecutive free throws to put the game out of reach.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Sonoma State.
