Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Can't Get Started Against Seawolves

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team never could get untracked in a home loss to Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles were limited to just 28.6 percent shooting and fell to the Seawolves, 62-45, Friday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-11, 5-6 CCAA) was coming off a big win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a game where the Golden Eagles shot 70 percent in the first half and never looked back. That momentum did not carry over into Friday's contest.

Sonoma State (6-8, 3-7 CCAA), which owns a win over national power Alaska Anchorage earlier this season, shot 51.7 percent in the opening half while opening up a 35-21 halftime lead. The Seawolves then held the Golden Eagles to just five points in the third quarter and never let up.

Rikke Fabricius had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Chiderah Uzowuru had eight points and two rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench.

Carly Gill had a game-high 20 points for Sonoma State, while Madison Burroughs had 14.

Rebeccah DiRegolo had six points and a pair of blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Alyssa Fisher had five points, three assists and two steals.

Cal State LA was just 16-of-56 from the field (28.6 percent) and just 3-of-14 from 3-point range (21.4 percent). The Golden Eagles were 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Sonoma State was very efficient on offense and finished the game 24-of-54 from the floor (44.4 percent). The Seawolves were 5-of-11 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Sonoma State had a 35-34 rebounding edge and the Golden Eagles committed 16 turnovers to 12 for the Seawolves.

Cal State LA took its only lead of the game at 7-6 after a 3-pointer by Fabricius with 6:17 to go in the opening quarter. The Golden Eagles didn't score again, though, for the remainder of the quarter and Sonoma State surged to a 14-7 lead.

The lead grew to 16-7 early in the second period before another 3-pointer by Fabricius, but Sonoma State scored the next six points and led by double-digit margins for the rest of the game. A 3-pointer by Fisher right before the end of the half made it 35-21 at halftime and a basket by Fabricius to open the third quarter made it 35-23, but Sonoma State went on a 9-0 run to open up a 44-23 lead.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter, but Mackenzie Barnes, Sacha Griffin and Uzowuru combined to lead the Golden Eagles down the stretch.

Cal State LA will be home again on Saturday with a game against San Francisco State.
