LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team put on quite a show in front of a large and lively Homecoming crowd in the University Gym.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 25-8 lead after one quarter and never looked back in an impressive 71-53 win over Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State LA (12-12, 9-7 CCAA) pulled to within one-half game of fifth place in the conference and is now just 1 ½ games out of fourth with four games remaining.
Samantha Lee recorded her second career-high in points in the last three games when she poured in 23 points, including six 3-pointers. The six three-pointers are just one off the program record for a single game.
Rachael DiRegolo also had a big night with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double, while
Rikke Fabricius had 16 points and six rebounds.
Marina LaPuzza had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Sabrea Coleman and Mya Johnson scored 13 points each for Cal State San Bernardino (12-7, 9-6 CCAA).
Christine Delapina had five points, six rebounds and six assists for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 52.3 percent for the game (23-of-44) and was a blistering 60 percent from 3-point range (9-of-15). Lee was 6-of-9 from behind the arc and Fabricius was 2-for-3. Delapina hit the other 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA had a huge 41-23 rebounding edge and also knocked down 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Cal State San Bernardino, which had been one of the hottest teams in the conference in recent weeks, shot just 35.5 percent (22-of-62) and was 5-of-18 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA committed 20 turnovers to 10 for the Coyotes.
Cal State LA never trailed in the game and closed out the first period with a 14-4 run to open up a 25-8 lead after one quarter. The Golden Eagles opened up their biggest lead at 37-13, after a basket by Fabricius, and settled for a 44-25 lead at halftime.
The Coyotes surged in the third quarter and pulled to within nine points at 51-42, but a basket by LaPuzza and a 3-pointer by Fabricius pushed the lead back to 14 points entering the fourth quarter.
Delapina hit a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter and Cal State San Bernardino never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
