Golden Eagles Fall Short Against Humboldt State

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team ran into a red-hot Humboldt State team on Sunday and dropped a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early when the 'Jacks made 9 of their 12 first-quarter field-goal attempts and went on to an 83-73 victory in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (5-10, 4-5 CCAA) trailed 24-12 after one quarter and never could make up the early deficit. Humboldt State (8-5, 7-1 CCAA) answered every Cal State LA challenge on its way to victory.

Christine Delapina had a season-high 19 points for the Golden Eagles and also had four rebounds and four assists. Mackenzie Barnes had 12 points and freshman Alyssa Fisher also contributed 12 points off the bench.

Tyla Turner had 19 points to lead Humboldt State, while Tyra Turner had 18 points. Riann Thayer had 12 points and Isamar Conde added 11.

Chiderah Uzowuru had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while Rikke Fabricius had eight points and five rebounds. Neele Steinort hit a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers and had six points.

Cal State LA shot 50 percent for the game (23-of-46), while Humboldt State was even better at 54.5 percent (30-of-55). The Golden Eagles were a sizzling 13-of-25 from 3-point range, while the 'Jacks finished 9-of-17. Cal State LA was 14-of-19 from the free-throw line, while Humboldt State was 14-of-18.

The Golden Eagles had a 27-21 rebounding edge, but were victimized by 20 turnovers while the 'Jacks committed only six.

Cal State LA fell behind early, 22-8, before a four-point play by Fisher helped the Golden Eagles trim the margin to 24-12 at the end of quarter.

The Golden Eagles closed to within eight points at halftime, 41-33, and pulled to within five points after a 3-pointer by Madison Adams to open the third quarter. Humboldt State, though, responded with a 13-2 run to extend its advantage to 54-38. The 'Jacks still led by 16 points at 61-45, but 3-pointers by Fisher and Barnes to close the third period made it 61-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Golden Eagles, though, surrendered the first five points of the period and didn't score until a 3-pointer by Delapina made it 66-54 with 4:59 to go. The Golden Eagles continued to battle, but couldn't get enough defensive stops to put a big dent in the Humboldt State lead.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
