Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Start Slowly In CCAA Game At Chico

CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team took awhile to get things going after its winter break and the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome Chico State.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many as 17 points in the second quarter and ultimately fell to the Wildcats, 64-55, Friday night in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (5-9, 4-4 CCAA) slipped back to .500 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while Chico State (6-5, 4-3 CCAA) pulled one-half game ahead of the Golden Eagles.

Rebeccah DiRegolo had a strong game for the Golden Eagles, posting a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double. Rikke Fabricius had 16 points and six rebounds, while Chiderah Uzowuru had 11 points in a productive effort off the bench.

Whitney Branham had 16 points for the Wildcats, while Vanessa Holland had 10 points.

The difference in the game came from 3-point range, where Chico State made 11-of-25 of its attempts and Cal State LA was just 2-of-10.

The Golden Eagles shot 36.4 percent for the game (20-of-55), while Chico State shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58). The Golden Eagles shot just 29.6 percent in the first half, while falling behind 38-24 by halftime. Chico State was 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the first two quarters.

Cal State LA had a 39-35 rebounding edge, but also committed 14 turnovers to 10 for Chico State.

The Golden Eagles managed only a pair of DiRegolo free throws over the first five minutes and didn't make their first basket until a Fabricius 3-pointer made it 6-5 with 4:43 to go in the opening period. Cal State LA trailed 21-14 after one quarter and fell behind by as many as 17 points, 38-21, in the second quarter before three late points from DiRegolo made it 38-24 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by 17 points again, 45-28, before a strong rally put them back within striking distance. The Golden Eagles closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run and opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws by Fabricius and a layup by DiRegolo made it 45-39 with eight minutes to go. A layup by DiRegolo got the Golden Eagles within six points, 49-43, with five minutes to play, but that's as close as Cal State LA would get.

A 3-pointer by Madison Adams with 1:27 to go gave the Golden Eagles a chance, but Chico State was efficient in closing out the win.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Humboldt State at 1 p.m.
