LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team used a big second-half performance to post an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles erased a 27-20 halftime deficit and went on to a 52-46 win over the Cougars. Cal State LA (5-8, 4-3 CCAA) outscored Cal State San Marcos (1-7, 1-3 CCAA), 20-6, in the third quarter and then got a big fourth-quarter effort from
Chiderah Uzowuru to get the win.
Rikke Fabricius had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Madison Adams had a 12-point, 10-rebouind double-double. Uzowuru had nine points, six rebounds and three assists and scored six of her points in the fourth quarter while the Golden Eagles were trying to hold off the Cougars.
Raegen Lillie had 17 points and six rebounds for the Cougars, while Lupe Cruz and Stephanie Somers had eight points each.
Christine Delapina had 10 rebounds to go along with four points and four assists for Cal State LA, while
Rebeccah DiRegolo had seven points and three rebounds.
Cal State LA shot just 27.9 percent for the game (17-of-61) and made just 3-of-18 from 3-point range. Cal State San Marcos shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) and was just 2-of-18 from 3-point range. Cal State LA had a big edge at the free-throw line, going 15-of-26, while Cal State San Marcos was just 2-of-5. Cal State LA had a 47-43 rebounding edge and committed only six turnovers to 12 for Cal State San Marcos.
Cal State LA trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but a jumper by Adams made it 27-20 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles made a big surge in the third quarter and used a 12-0 run to end the period that turned a 33-28 deficit into a 40-33 lead. A three-point play by Fabricius started the run and Fabricius scored a basket shortly after a free throw by Uzowuru to give the Golden Eagles a 34-33 lead. Uzowuru, Fabricius and
Mackenzie Barnes scored baskets to end the run as Cal State LA held Cal State San Marcos scoreless over the final five minutes of the period.
Cal State LA led for the remainder of the game, but Cal State San Marcos scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and made it close the rest of the way. A jumper by Lillie pulled the Cougars to within 48-46 with 59 seconds left, but a pair of free throws by Fabricius and two more by Adams closed out the win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Dec. 29 with a road game at Chico State.
