Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Suffer A Tough OT Defeat To Tritons

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had to deal with an excruciating overtime loss to first-place UC San Diego Sunday night in a game the Golden Eagles thought should have ended in regulation.

The Golden Eagles were called for a controversial traveling call in the waning seconds that gave UC San Diego the ball with a chance to tie and the Tritons took advantage of the reprieve, sending the game into overtime and ultimately prevailing, 60-56, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-8, 3-3 CCAA) had a 50-48 lead with the ball and five seconds remaining and appeared to be fouled, only to be shocked when the call was instead traveling. UC San Diego got the ball with four seconds left and, after a timeout, Taylor Tanita sent a beautiful pass in the post to Delayna Sampton, who hit the game-tying shot with 2.3 seconds left.

Cal State LA got a look for Madison Adams just before the buzzer, but her 3-point attempt rattled in and out and the game went into overtime.

UC San Diego took an early lead in overtime on another basket by Sampton and led the rest of the way.

Rikke Fabricius and Mackenzie Barnes scored 13 points each for the Golden Eagles, while Adams had 10 points.

Sampton had a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds for UC San Diego (8-2, 4-0 CCAA), while Mikayla Williams had 10 points.

Rebeccah DiRegolo had eight points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Chiderah Uzowuru had seven points and six rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 35 percent for the game (21-of-60) and knocked down 8-of-24 attempts from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 6-of-12 from the free-throw line. UC San Diego shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) and was 3-of-12 from 3-point range. The Tritons were 9-of-14 from the free-throw line.

The Tritons had a 44-38 rebounding edge.

The game was a tight battle throughout with Cal State LA taking the biggest lead of the game, 48-39, with 6:11 to go, after a basket by Uzowuru. UC San Diego, though, took advantage of another unusual call, a foul called as Joleen Yang hit a 3-pointer. UC San Diego kept possession and scored again on a layup by Williams to make it 48-44, with 3:47 to go. UC San Diego completed an 8-0 run on a layup by Sampton with 2:26 to go to pull to within one point at 48-47. Fabricius hit two free throws to make it 50-47 and Kayla Soto hit one free throw for UC San Diego to make it 50-48 with 56 seconds left.

Barnes blocked a shot by Soto, but Sampton got the rebound for UC San Diego. She missed her rebound and attempt, but got another rebound and was tied up for a jump ball with possession going to the Golden Eagles with seven seconds to go. UC San Diego fouled immediately for only its third team foul of the quarter and then appeared to foul again, only for the call to be traveling instead.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a home game against Cal State San Marcos at 5:30 p.m.
