SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made a strong return to California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Golden Eagles erased an early deficit and recorded a solid 68-61 win over San Francisco State Friday night in Main Gym. Cal State LA (3-6, 2-1 CCAA) trailed by as many as seven points early in the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles were able to grab a 30-24 lead by halftime and held the advantage the rest of the way.
Rikke Fabricius had another big game with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Cal State LA.
Christine Delapina had 14 points and six assists and
Mackenzie Barnes made an impressive return with 12 points.
Jhaina Stephens led San Francisco State (2-3, 0-2 CCAA) with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Courtenay Brown had 14 points and Tyiteyana Jefferson had 10 points.
Rebeccah DiRegolo had eight points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Chiderah Uzowuru added eight points.
Cal State LA shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) while San Francisco State shot just 36.5 percent (23-of-63). The Golden Eagles made 5-of-20 from 3-point range, while the Gators were 5-of-18. The Golden Eagles were 17-of-27 from the free-throw line, while the Gators were 10-of-11.
The Golden Eagles did a great job on the boards and had a 45-34 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles trailed 16-9 early in the second period, but a three-point play by Delapina started the comeback. The Gators still held a 20-14 lead before an 8-0 run gave the Golden Eagles a 22-20 lead. After the Gators tied it at 22-22, the Golden Eagles closed out the half with an 8-2 run to take a 30-24 halftime lead. A 3-pointer by Fabricius and a jumper by Uzowuru completed the run.
A three-point play by Fabricius to open the second half pushed the lead to 33-26, but the Gators pulled to within two points, 38-36, before a big 3-pointer by
Neele Steinort stopped the run. The Gators got to within one point at 41-40 before a basket by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 43-40 lead heading into the final period.
Cal State LA was protecting a 50-48 lead when Fabricius hit a big 3-pointer to make it 53-48 with four minutes to go. Fabricius followed with a layup to push the lead to 55-48 with 3:32 to go and a Barnes free throw gave the Golden Eagles a 60-50 advantage.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at Stanislaus State.
