Golden Eagles Hang On For Win Over Eagles

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got some key plays down the stretch and was able to hold on to a big West Region victory over Concordia-Irvine.

Rikke Fabricius hit two free throws in the final minute for what turned out to be the winning points in a 63-62 victory Tuesday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (2-4) won its second straight game while handing Concordia (2-1) its first loss of the season.

Fabricius had 19 points and nine rebounds and just missed her fifth double-double of the season. She was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line and made two clutch free throws with 54 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good.

The Golden Eagles also got a big night off the bench from junior Chiderah Uzowuru, who had a season-high 15 points. Rebeccah DiRegolo had eight points, five rebounds and four blocks.

Portia Neale had 19 points to lead Concordia, while Riley Friauf had 18 points and six rebounds.

Christine Delapina had eight points, four rebounds and five assists, while Madison Adams had eight points and three rebounds.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the game, leading 17-13 after one quarter and leading by as many as nine points in the second quarter before settling for a 32-20 lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the third quarter, but went on an 10-0 run to grab a 44-36 lead. DiRegolo started the rally with a layup to tie it and Uzowuru followed with a layup for the lead. DiRegolo scored after an offensive rebound, Uzowuru scored on another layup and Fabricius made a layup to complete the run.

Cal State LA had a 51-46 lead after three quarters following a jumper by Delapina.

The Golden Eagles fell behind, 58-57, with 4:49 to go, but Fabricius hit a pair of free throws to regain the lead and Uzowuru hit a jumper to make it 61-58. A pair of free throws by Friauf gave the Eagles the lead, 62-61, but Fabricius was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and hit two free throws for the lead with 54 seconds to go. Alyssa Fisher made a big steal with 36 seconds left and was able to grab an offensive rebound with 10 seconds to go. Cal State LA was able to run out the clock to preserve the win.

Cal State LA will return to action in a Thanksgiving tournament at Point Loma on Friday. The Golden Eagles will face the tourney hosts at 5 p.m.
